Answer this one if you can.....

Post by gmackie » Tue Oct 25, 2005 5:26 pm

Hello all,I am trying to find the parents of one of my ancestors but i am getting conflicting clues but unable to piece them together so any guidance would be very grateful.
The lady concerned is JANE HENRY, born approx. 1838, married to William Mackie in Aberdeen on 17/01/1862 and the certificate shows her parents as ARCHIBALD HENRY (deceased) and MARGARET HENRY M.S. WATSON. The 1871 census shows her living with her family in Aberdeen and also lists her mother there also but now she is called ANN HENRY !!!
I have searched for a Jane Henry born to parents of Archibald Henry and Margaret Watson, nothing listed. Also to parents of Archibald Henry and Ann Watson, again nothing. I can find an Archibald Henry/Margaret Wylie and also a James Henry/Anne Watson. I am completely baffled. Help please.

Many thnks, the age of Jane fits in. Her address is shown as Wales St. Aberdeen on her mariage cert. The birthplace of Ann Henry on the 1871 census is shown as Kincardinshire, Dunnoter. If this is the family how does it explain the father as Archibald on her marriage cert and the mother as Margaret Watson and yet her mother is shown as Ann on the census.

RE Differences in names

Dont be thrown by the change in names from census to marriage certificate.I have had differentials in lots of mine. Also bear in mind that people "go" by different names- my Father is John on all official documents but known always as Ian & thus named on his headstone,Death Notice etc.I had one daughter give her Mother as Agnes although she was in fact Ann & named as such in every official document but the family may have called her Agnes-we dont know in most circumstances what our ancestors called themselves-maybe numbers would be easier.
