Jane/Jean/Janet.....

Post by jillruss » Sun Oct 30, 2005 4:52 pm

Hi,
Can anyone help, please?

I'm trying to establish the name of the mother of my ggggrandmother, Elisabeth Pirie. I vaguely remember reading somewhere that the names Jane/Jean and Janet were more or less interchangeable - if you know what I mean! Is that right?

I'm going by the Scottish naming pattern where the first daughter is usually named after the maternal grandmother. Elisabeth named her first daughter Jean (but it appears on the census as Jane) and her second daughter was named Margaret. I seem to have whittled down the choice of Elisabeth's mother to either Janet Robertson or Margaret Ferguson - so, whether or not Janet is a form of Jean/Jane is crucial!

I know it's not exactly science, but it's all I've got to go on!

Hi Jill,
Yes, Janet, Jane and Jean were interchangeable in my family tree and the 1861 Census has now shown, for the second time, a Jessie listed as a Janet by the census taker.

Hi Jill, you´ll not be forgetting Sheena for "Jean", I take it! :)

Good hunting,

Thrall.
