A shot in the dark, can you help?.....

Post by Maud Jarvis » Tue Nov 01, 2005 4:07 pm

:?:

This is a bit of a "shot in the dark" which I hope someone out there may connect?

My gt uncle, Edward Plews Grant (known as Ted) married Edlizabth Edgar
(daughter of David Edgar and Jemima Hart)in 1890 in Edinburgh.
By the 1901 census they were living at Orwll Place, St Michael Edinburgh.

I visited him and his wife (they had no children, regularly up until 1948, when he died in a nursing home at Lasswade, his wife Elizabeth (Auntie Lizzie) died earlier in 1943.

Elizabeth had a niece, whose name unfortunately I do not know, she regularly visited Edward and was responsible I believe for his admission to the nursing home.

My quest is in trying to find this niece, not an easy task when I do not know her name I`m afraid. My hope is that someone may be researching the Edgar/or Hart family and may know of Edward and his wife Elizabeth, whose maiden name was Hart.

My purpose in trying to trace the niece or anyone she was connected to, is in the hope that she may have had some effects of Edward when he died, photographs for instance, I only started researching my side of the family a few years ago, and have very few photographs connected to my grandmother`s side, I did not know until I started researching, that Edward was in fact my grandmother`s half-brother, I would love to contact anyone who knew of him or his wife in order that we could share some details.
Unfortunately I was told very little about my family, and there are no elderly relatives around now that I could question. (at least none that I know of!) My main purpose now that I have started to research, is the hope of finding any relatives or at least anyone who knows of them and could enlighten me about some of the facts of my family.

I know its asking a lot in appealing for any help, especially when I know
so little, but you never know strange things do happen as I have learnt!

Hello Maud

This looks likely to be the family of David & Jemima Edgar with Elizabeth still at home in 1881. Unfortunatley it's a rather large family too!! That makes for a lot of choices to chase down the right branch to find the unknown neice. Not impossible that you might get lucky and find someone who has already researched this line....but if you get tired of waiting....this is a stepping stone to get you started....

A shot in the dark

Post by Maud Jarvis » Wed Nov 02, 2005 12:14 pm

Hello, Just Jean,
Thank you so much for taking the trouble to give me the 1881 information from the census, that was very kind of you and is much appreciated.

I can see already from the names listed, that of my gt uncle`s wife and also, her sister, who is given on the marriage certificate, as her witness, though not as her full name of Isabella, but just Bella, although I did guess that it was probably a short version of her name when saw it.
They certainly appear to have had a large family, and my hope is of course that someone is researching the family and that hopefully I will eventually make contact.

Well, as you mention, it is a start and I will hopefully enlarge on it as I go along. My next step in due time, will be to access the Scotspeople site and find out more about them. I usually wait until I have several people that I wish to look up before I make a start (and of course payment!)and in that way I may find out who the particular niece could be.

Thank you once again for your help
