ross family.....

Post by pollywolly » Mon Nov 07, 2005 10:11 am

hi
am actually trying to find some living members of my branch of the ross family. up until recently i believed myself and my siblings were the last but new information has came to light that my grandfather had another brother which we knew nothing about. my grandfather was george scougall ross born 1914 in edinburgh. his brothers were robert and william years of birth unknown. i knew about robert and he died in the 1980s single. however william married a fairgreave but i know nothing else about him and whether he had any children etc. other than this i have managed to trace the family back to 1849 and reckon i will be able to go further back than that. any help appreciated.
regards
paul

Welcome to TS!

With the information that you have, always assuming that it is accurate, it should be possible to establish if there are any children from the ROSS/FAIRGRIEVE marriage.

From 1929 (1928 in some registration districts) onwards the birth indexes also show the mother's maiden name. Similarly, from 1974 onwards the death indexes also show the mother's maiden name.

Once the existence of this marriage has been confirmed, then it's a matter of using the above techniques to trace forwards births, marriages and death up to, hopefully, records in the past few years which have addresses that you can contact ............

In other words, looking at all ROSS births for ones with a match with FAIRGRIEVE, and similar in the death indexes. It's a nice judgement sometimes as to whether to attempt to shortcut the process and look directly for post 1973 deaths :?

The only thing is that this can only be done at New Register House in Edinburgh, or one of the increasing number of local centres such as Park Circus in Glasgow which now have on-line access to DIGROS in Edinburgh.

Using the early censuses and death regiister entries should allow you to go back well beyond 1849, never mind what the OPRs might produce.

Hi Paul
Can't claim to know any of your Ross descendants but was wondering if we had a link somewhere.
My gr gr grandfather was Robert Ross born around 1841 died in 1891 was married twice first to Margaret Robertson in 1872 and secondly to Mary Jones in 1883 (though this marriage doesn't appear at NRH). His parents were John Ross & Margaret Primrose, they had several children who lived in Leith but I haven't been able to find their births nor John & Margaret's marriage. Robert's siblings were Elizabeth, Rachel, Ella & John, there may have bene more but not sure.
Hoopefully we can help each other.
Regards
Bertha

Hi there, I am here looking for ANY information that I can find about my Grandfather, I don't have alot, so I am just wondering if there could be a link here......my grandfather's name was Robert Ross, he was born in 1914, and died around 1980, he was living in Ontario, Canada at the time, as he had been since the 40's. It was always to my understanding that my Grandfather was born in Northern Ireland, and I have done many searches for his birth records through the General Register in Belfast, turning up nothing! But recently, I thought to myself that perhaps he wasn't actually born in Ireland, but instead Scotland and the family just moved to Ireland. If any of this sounds familiar to you, please contact me!!!
Thank you!
Cheryl
