Stewarts in Butler PA.....

Post by KenS » Sat Nov 12, 2005 10:19 am

Looking for info on family of John D. Stewart and his ancestors & decendants. John D. & family are in the USA 1930 census. Wife Maude L., Daug. Eva C, son Thomas W etc. In 1923 his family lived at 718 W. Penn St., Butler PA. My aunt Isobel Stewart was John's cousin. Her huband John Bell Mattocks emmigrated from Scotland to John's address. Trying to determine family ties. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

John and family found in USA 1920 census. Now looking for links back to Scotland.

Hello Kenneth

Welcome to TalkingScot! I can only surmise that you and our other member "mattocks" are working together on your family research? In case you're not...well you should be :D In another post on this same forum (from mattocks) you will find some good leads to help you further along.

I'm curious though....I spent some time searching the 1930 US census index for John D. Stewart and family....found them in 1920 but his occupation at that time was a general storekeeper?? Just where are they hiding on the 1930 census?

Best wishes
Jean

Jean, Thank you so much for reply. Yes Brook Mattocks and myself are working together on family history. She received some valuable census info 1881 Scotland that filled in some blanks. The info was provided by "Andy" & was great. Owe him a big thanks. Will try to find Butler Stewarts in USA 1920 census as you suggest. By the way given name Jean runs thru our family. My sis & daughter are Jeans.

Thanks very much again for your reply.

Best wishes

Ken, can you believe that though I've been actively researching for about 5 years, I just found this forum tonight, and I noticed your thread. I also live near Hagerstown, and have researched my Stinsons on-site in Beaver and Lawrence Cos., adjoining Butler. Small world! I think there were some Stewarts somewhere also. I went to Scotland this spring, and I'm tracking my ancestors through Montreal as well.
I was flabbergasted to discover that the LDS church (Fairview?) north of Rouzerville PA (east of Waynesboro) on Old Forge Rd has the OPR microfiches! They're open something like 10-1 and 6-9 Tu/Weds/Thu.
Thanks to JustJean for the info of yours that I've read. I'll post my specific questions soon. This looks like an interesting, active, and informative forum.

Kenneth and Brook,

I often get carried away a bit. From other posts I found the original death information that you were given wasn't correct.

I tend to work a bit differently from most "normal" genealogists and can work out many lines all at the same time.

I'm guessing you are fairly new to the game but I had a hunch that something was wrong.

Pick one (PROPER) line that that I've uncovered (your choice) The information for any chosen line is there as a starting point.

If you are just starting please don't try to do all lines at the same time.

I've been in the game for a while and couldn't see a possible match for your lines so looked sideways and stuff. The information I have provided on other posts is 100% correct for later information provided.

Take each branch one at a time .... you WILL be able to get back at least two more generations on all lines from the wee starter I provided.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

I believe the wrong information was regarding a James Stewart who is buried in Southern Necropolis about 1896 and his wife, a Janet Henderson (I think). Your Isabella's grandmother WAS a Jessie Henderson but certainly not the one supposedly buried in 1898.

The information I've provided is based upon Isabella Stewart's marriage to John Bell Mattocks in 1918 which I believe to be your proper lineage.

From there it was easy to find both Isabella and John's birth certs and the marriage cert of both sets of parents. It was also easy to find the proper deaths of Isabella's parents, James Stewart and Janet Kelly.

All other information is available on the main Scotland's People site, where, for a small outlay, you'll be able to find a great many lines.
