look up please for Peter McLachlan, Cambusnethan and Wishaw.

Post by kathleen » Sun Nov 20, 2005 1:27 pm

Hello everyone

This is my first post to the site so I'm hoping someone can help. My ancestor Peter McLachlan is listed on the 1881 census as living at 98 Caledonian Road, Cambusnethan, Lanark. He is age 50, born Woodlaw, Lanark. What I am trying to locate is a marriage to Mary McDonald. Their son George was born December 03 1863, at what looks like 5 East Thornlie Street, Wishaw. Parents Peter McLachlan and Mary McLachlan ms McDonald, date of the marriage is given as 1852 November, Wishaw. So far I have been unable to find any record of the marriage and wonder if anyone at Talking Scot can help.

Hi Kathleen,

Welcome to TalkingScot.

A parent search on the online IGI gives these children to Peter McLachlan and Mary McDonald.
  • MCLACHLAN - (Female) Birth: 06 JUN 1858 Cambusnethan, Lanark
ANN MCLAUGHLAN - Birth: 01 APR 1859 Cambusnethan, Lanark
JANET MCLACHLAN - Birth: 02 JUL 1861 Cambusnethan, Lanark
GEORGE MCLACHLAN - Birth: 03 DEC 1863 Cambusnethan, Lanark
MCLAUCHLAN - (Male) Birth: 21 MAR 1866 Cambusnethan, Lanark
MARGARET MCLAUCHLAN - Birth: 23 FEB 1867 Cambusnethan, Lanark
PETER MCLAUCHLAN - Birth: 21 JAN 1870 Cambusnethan, Lanark
MARY MCLACHLAN - Birth: 29 FEB 1872 Cambusnethan, Lanark
The marriage should be noted on all of these certificates exept for the 1858 and 1859 ones (it was not normally listed on birth certificates of 1856-1860). The two with no first names may have not lived long enough to be given a first name, and there may be corresponding death certificates for two very young babies there.

Unfortunately the online IGI shows no sign of their marriage. The IGI stops at 1875 for entries extracted from the Scottish records, so there could be more children after 1875. The above list also shows that you need to consider various spellings of the family surname.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hello Andrew

Thank you for your reply. I also looked at the I.G.I. but as you say no record of a marriage. I think I need to go through the old parish records for Wishaw 1852. Yes the spelling of the name has changed through the years. Son John McDonald McLachlan born 1854 is registered on his marriage certificate as McLachlan but his death certificate is registered as McLauchlan. I've hit a bit of a brick wall with this one as so often happens, no matter will keep searching.
