As Predicted.....

Post by Miss Poohs » Thu Nov 24, 2005 11:25 pm

Here I am asking for help

New to this as I am, I'm doing OK with my dads side of the family, so far so good there :).

I'm having a real problem with tracing any of my mums dads family.

My mum seems to think he was born in Ireland. I have found his marriage cert to my gran - 27th Feb 1925 (in Glasgow), when he was 23 yrs old, so I reckon he was born around 1902-ish.

He died in the 1970's but it's all very cloak and dagger as I gather he had mental health issues after being in the war, my mum won't even admitt this to me, prefering to insist he died when she was a child.

Apparently he had 5 brothers and one sister who all lived here in Scotland and I can't find trace of anyone of them.

I have traced Herberts parents death certificates.

One of my grandfathers brothers signed his fathers death cert, so I know he was alive in 1939, but can find nothing to say where/when he was born, married or died.

My grandfathers name was Herbert Fernie Todd - his brothers were, I'm told, William, Fredrick, Terence, Eric and Jackie - and the sister - May.

All the info I have at the moment on Herberts parents has them based in the Glasgow area.

They were engine fitters to trade.

Can any one offer me any advice.

Thanks in advance

Hi Janice

Sooooo....just what were the names of Herbert's parents then? And....did you try to locate them on the 1901 Scottish census yet? If they weren't in Scotland then I think the Irish Census exists for 1901 doesn't it??....(not sure on that) but if it does you might find them there.

Best wishes
Jean

Herberts father was John Henry Todd, born approx 1864 - died in Glasgow 8th July 1939 at the age of 75 yrs.

His mother Susan Jane Todd (MS McMeekin) was born approx 1862 - she died as the result of an accident 28th Sept 1929 at the age of 67 yrs.

I tried looking for the Irish census, but didn't trace them in that, perhaps I didn't look in the right place though. I have no idea where abouts in Ireland they were from.

Hi Janice

First impression.....I've got McMeekin in my bloodline and they are all from Antrim....anywhere from Ballyclare area over towards Ballymena. And I know for a fact there were Todds in the same area. I'll have to look at my records. Don't have your people as I'm sure I would recall a Susan.....but......both surnames I've seen in this area. I'll let you know if I stumble onto anything interesting.......so nice to see the McMeekin name crop up  !!

Best wishes

I'd be really grateful of any help, thank you.

John Henry Todd's parents were John Todd and Margaret Todd (MS McMillan)

Susan Jane McMeekin's parents were William McMeekin and Mary McMeekin (MS Morrow)

That's about all I've got.

Hi Janice

Well I've been through my folder from front to back and find no hint of your McMeekins and Todds....but....there is a marriage of Herbert's brother Fredrick on SP

1 1925 TODD FREDERICK HENRY LIVINGSTON GRACE BALLANTYN SCOTSTOUN AND YOKER GLASGOW CITY LANARK 575/02 0054

which doesn't tell you much more than you know now but at least does give you Fredrick's wife's name. Interestingly this marriage was in the Primitive Methodist Church which doesn't bode well for linking to my overly staunch Church of Scotland Presbyterian McMeekin line...... :(

Best wishes
