Searching for Neilson's in Lanark...

Post by Legs11 » Mon Nov 28, 2005 8:54 pm

Hello everyone,

I would be really grateful if anyone could help me with my Neilson's.

All I know is Thomas Neilson married Elizabeth Hoatson (I think) on December 26th 1843 in Crawfordjohn. I have them on the 1861 census with one son Thomas (aged 14) living in Carluke.

Thomas (son) married Margaret Ritchie in Carluke on November 16th 1866. I have them on the 1881 census with 5 children, living in Lesmahagow.

Now I'm stuck.... did Thomas and Elizabeth only have the one child? Any other info about the families would be great especially anything reguarding Thomas' (father) parents or the parents of Elizabeth or Margaret.

Thank you in anticipation
Love

Hello Legs

The IGI has another child of the couple:

1. THOMAS NEILSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 19 MAY 1846 Crawfordjohn, Lanark, Scotland

2. WILLIAM HOATSON NEILSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 07 MAY 1848 Crawfordjohn, Lanark, Scotland

I'm afraid I'm not at home to check my 1881 discs for William's whereabouts in 1881.

Good Luck

Ellen.
Researching: Grant; MacIntosh; Wright; Parley; Souter; Jaffray; Sangster; all North East & Speyside and Sutherland, Glasgow then Sutherland County; Buchanan, Stirlingshire; Lamond, North East; Stronach, Morayshire to name but a few!

Thank you Ellen,

I'm assuming that William Hoatson Neilson must have died before 1861 otherwise he would have been with the family for the census as he would only have been 12/13 years old.

Thanks again

Hi legs

Yup...you're right...William's death is noted as part of the IGI submittal...

Birth: 12 APR 1848

Christening: 07 MAY 1848 Crawfordjohn, Lanark, Scotland

Death: 29 JAN 1849

I too am away from my home computer so can't look further at the moment. It would be worth a check on the BIVRI disks to see if the births or marriage might show up there. If you locate the deaths of Thomas Sr. or Elizabeth (Hoatson) on SP you could learn their parents names....(hopefully!)......

Best wishes
Jean

Hi All,

Well Jean I never thought I would find a death entry as I thought there would be too many variations on her surname but..............

From SP - Betty Neilson Hoatson died in 1899 age 75 in Lesmahagow.

Just in case you don't have the full brood, Thomas and Margaret Ritchie had at least 7 children.

The First, Betty Hoatson Neilson, was born in 1866 but must have died young. Betty H. (Mark 2) who was with the grandparents in 1881 was born in 1871.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Morning Jean, Annette and Andy,

Thank you all so much for all your help. I am so grateful.

Jean, Thank you for the info on Wm H N. Where can I search the BIVRI disks (and what exactly are they?)? And who ir what is SP? I'm very new to the Scottish research, sorry if I'm being dense!!

Annette, Thank you for everything you found. I'm so pleased you found Betty H Neilson, my granddad remembers visiting 'the formidable Aunt Bett' at Dalserf when he was a young boy and being taken walking with Uncle ?Archie? (not 100% sure of the name or whether he was Bett's borther or husband!) He clearly remembers Uncle having a wooden leg and getting it lost in a bog one day!

Andy, Thank you for the Betty info! I didn't have either Betty before. Including them I have Thomas (born 1869) (My great great grandfather), Margaret (born 1870), William H (born 1874), Jane (born 1879) and John (born 1880). Does that agree with what you found? I do hope so! I wonder why Betty was with her grandparents for the 1881 when all the other children were with their parents?

Thank you all again for yout time and help.
Love
Legs

Hi Legs

I can explain the abbreviations but I can also save you the trouble of searching the BIVRI as they ain't there!!!

BIVRI - British Isles Vital Records Index - Is a CD Rom source compiled and sold by the Mormon Church. It is available to order through their website at FamilySearch.com. It contains Birth and Marriage data from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales and oftentimes has records or bits of info that are not available through their much larger online source...IGI (International Genealogical Index). It is far from complete but does have approx 10.4 million birth/christening records and an additional 1.9 million marriage records. Records are dated from 1530 - 1906. Don't be fooled in that there are some areas with little or no coverage at all....especially the Scottish Highlands, however Lanarkshire, Ayrshire, Midlothian and such have a decent showing. I find it especially handy when looking for births or marriages before 1855.....sometimes you get lucky 8)

SP - Scotland's People - The pay per view website for Scottish reseearch. Surely you'll be a regular visitor there as you learn more about your family and your credit card will suffer :( Annette located the death record for Elizabeth Hoatson Neilson in the index for you there. If you go to the site you can purchase a "view" of this and if it's the record you seek then you can print off a copy of the actual image of the recording made by the registrar. From this you'll gain information about Elizabeth's parents, her marital status at the time of death, her address, age, and also who was the informant for her death.....which can often lead to the finding of other family members.

Looks like you have a wealth of family stories to help you put your family tree together

Best wishes and please keep asking more questions if you get stuck!!

Jean

MCKENZIE Susanna F 40 Outside Census County (1841)
HOWATSON Elizabeth F 15 Female Servant Outside Census County (1841)
BROWN Alexander M 20 Miner Iron Ayrshire
BROWN David M 20 Miner Iron Ayrshire

There are a number of Ayrshire births around the same time with identical middle names so perhaps there are other Hoatson/Howatson rellies to find.

Hope this was of interest.
