What is it with that surname? In every generation of that family there seem to be several who go AWOL and end up with stunt-doubles in Argyllshire!! (who are NOT related....as far as I can work out)
Anyway, hoping someone can help me sort this puzzling John out, or suggest a new angle as I'm stuck. Details as follows:
OPR 493/3 Bonhill, Dunbartonshire
John, lawful son of Arch. McNicol and Margaret McKenzie in Northfield was born 27th March 1827
1841 Bonhill En.Dist 10 page 3
Ruchetmoss
Archibald McNicol age 50, Ag.Lab, no, Margaret 40, no, Donald 16 Mason App. Yes, John 14, Smith App. Yes, Janat 10, Tearer? Teaser? yes, Margaret aged 6, Archibald aged 4
Bonhill 1851 census
Buntinsland
John Mcnicol head. married 23, blacksmith, (which would make sense if he was an apprentice smith in 1841, but no other evidence that this is definately him) ) wife Mary, 24, dau Mary 2 all born Bonhill.
Not found so far in 1861 or 71
...but then I came across this:
NAS - will
McNicol John 17/1/1873 Blacksmith, Residing at Greenock. Paisley Sheriff Court .
NAS document states he had sons John, Hugh and a dau. Mary. Was residing at Kanchraparah near Calcutta, Bengal(!) Addresses given were: 10 East Shaw Street, Greenock and 1 Charles Street Greenock. (which cross-refs. with death found on GROS, details below). Calcutta, will 15/3/1872. (so this one was probably in Calcutta for the 1871)
1873 MCNICOL JOHN M 48 GREENOCK OLD OR WEST RENFREW 564/03 0041
Death states Blacksmith, "widower of...______" (blank) no parents names given, died Jan 6th 1873 Infirmary Greenock, usual address Charles? or Clark? Street, aged 48 which seems about 2 years too old, but then the death informant was Daniel McTaggart, Infirmary Porter, so probably hadn't a clue. Died of fracture of skull from an unknown cause.
Have had no sucess with trying to trace the wife Mary mentioned in 1851 -except two possibles on IGI:
John MacNicol
Spouse: MARY MACGREGOR
Marriage: 06 JAN 1849 Bonhill, Dunbarton, Scotland
However there is also:
JOHN MACNICOL
Spouse: MARY WATERSON
Marriage: 20 APR 1850 Bonhill, Dunbarton, Scotland
Batch No.: M114936 1820 - 1855
- but that would make the daughter on 1851 census born before the marriage ...but not impossible.
And I've not got the the bottom the John, Hugh and a dau. Mary mentioned for the "Calcutta" John either.
Argh. Just not sure if the Calcutta one is "my" one or not.
Any thoughts, suggestions etc very welcome.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley
Sorry I can't help with your McNicol saga but I just wondered if your Dick family were from Kilrenny, Fife by any chance, if so - we might have a connection.
Good luck with your McNicols

Hi Annette
My Dicks are from Limekilns/Charleston/Dunfermline area. Later most of them moved to Edinburgh. Not impossible that some migth have strayed up the coast. Would you like me to send you a summary of what I have to your email address and you can see if any names ring a bell?
Best wishes

Hi all
This lot are still doing my head in. Maybe someone can help me out here?
(Forgetting Calcutta John above, who I think is not the one I'm looking or as his wife seems to have been Mary Cameron, and he states he was born Greenock on the 1861 census, Greenock)
Brief summary follows:
from IGI
JOHN MACNICOL
Spouse: MARY WATERSON
Marriage: 20 APR 1850 Bonhill, Dunbarton, Scotland
Batch No.: M114936 1820 - 1855
- and I have a copy of the OPR entry, whcih gives no further clues other than, "both of this parish".
I have a John McNicol who seems to be a son of theirs - he married in 1882 in Dunfermline to Isabella Innes, and states John McNicol & Mary Waterstone as his parents, with John his father stated as deceased & a blacksmith, so looking promising so far! He himself is a coalminer at that time.
(1881 he seems to have been in Dunfermline as a 25yr old lodger)
1882 marries, as above
1885 dau Jane born Cowdenbeath
1889 son Thomas born Cowdenbeath
1891 with family aged 35, Cambuslang
1893 dau Margaret born Cambuslang
1900 dau Charlotte born Cambuslang
1901 with family aged 45 in Cambuslang
(there are other children, but have not downloaded all births, just those above so only have census p.o.b to go on for others..
Christina McNicol b. Abt 1882, Coatbridge
John McNicol b. Abt 1888, Cambuslang
Henry McNicol b. Abt 1897, Cambuslang)
John Mcnicol died 1926 aged 69, at Cowdenbeath, a coalminer, married to Isabella Innes, parents stated as John McNicol a master blacksmith & Mary Waterson, son Henry was death informant.
Problems are:
1. Can't find John McNicols birth - must be around 1854-5, he stated Dumbarton, Dunbarton on census returns from 1881 onwards.
2. Can't find any other children to John M*cnic*o*l & Mary Water*on* pre 1855 on SP, or for any date on IGI....
3. Can't find his father John's death (the blacksmith) . If it was pre-1855 it may explain why I also can't find further kids; maybe there were no more?
4. And there are too many John M*cnic*o*l in 1861 to try to find him in situ with parents (or maybe just mother) - there are 20 of them aged 4-6!!
Tried the two I felt were most likely - Dumbarton & Rutherglen, but neither of those are him.
5. No sign of a death for Mary Water*on* post 1882....
Arghhh.
Help!!! Am I missing something blinkin' obvious here? Any suggestions welcome..
Best wishes
Lesley

Lesley,
Did you try Mary Wat*ers*on*....to allow for two 't's? I have a Waterstone here and there and sometimes it is spelled with two t's. Also I have a few McNicols, sometimes spelled McNicoll, so maybe another asterisk at the end will be of some help?

No, hadn't thought of that one. Thanks for that. Obvious really!!Did you try Mary Wat*ers*on*....to allow for two 't's?
The * before the final L in M*cnic*o*l should cover that one though.sometimes spelled McNicoll, so maybe another asterisk at the end will be of some help?
