James Mitchell.....

Post by delmarco » Thu Dec 01, 2005 2:10 pm

Morning all:

My search is now in the Mitchell direction, I'm trying to find this James Mitchell, married to Roseann McDonald, I cannot find a death record for him, he does not appear with them on the 1881 census, so I am assuming he died prior to 1881. Any help would be greatlyt appreicated.
Regards,
Karen :D
Make it a great day!

Hi Karen,
I know you'll already have all these.
If widow for Rose Ann is correct in 1881 then it would seem that hubby James MITCHELL has died sometime between 1871-1881.
But i'd guess there may be quite a few with that name, and of a similar age too.
He was 37yrs in 1861, maybe see if he's still with the family in 1871 to see what his age is then?
(Rosanne 25yrs in 1861)
Possibly died in the Cambuslang/Rutherglen area? - but that's not guaranteed; his death may have occurred elsewhere.

Hi Jack:
Well I weeded through all the James Mitchell's that I could on SP that were close, lucky for me it didnt take too long, he 8 Jan 1875, in cambuslang, he was 47 at the time married to Roseann McDonald. Parents Patrick Mitchell, and Bridget Rooney-Mitchell

I'll put a copy up in the gallery, I also found his marriage to Roseann, I'll put that there too.

Thanks Karen,
I'd just been wondering if my guess of 1871-1881 in the Cambuslang/Rutherglen area was right....
[ie - between the birth of Michael 1871 & wife Rose Ann as a widow in 1881]
I wouldn't like to think i'd given you poor info, and that he'd died outwith those years,and/or the area!
Good to see Roseann had signed James' DC - a number of my own were still using their "X" mark around then.

You mentioned "...I hadnt found Margaret Mitchell born in 1859..."
The children of a couple can sometimes be found by doing a "Parent Search" in the IGI
These links are from Sources on the TS Home Page.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... _form=true
--
Leave blank the First Name / Last Name,
In the Father / Last Name box at top right - type in father's forename & surname,
In the Mother / Last Name box - type in at least the mother's forename,
[but adding a surname too will normally reduce the no of names to look at],
Select Event - Birth/Christening,
Select a Region,
The Year Range, Country, County [if you know them] can help keep the number of results down.

I sometimes leave the wife's surname blank if there might be a few unusual spellings,
[but this usually gives very many names to trawl thru]

There's not much can be done though if it's the FATHER's name that could be spelled in a few different ways.
But Hugh Wallis' Batch Numbers may help if you know the possible Town or Parish - similar search procedures to above.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/

Select the Parish No, and enter this in the "Batch Number" box. You can then search in a variety of ways.
Eg. a forename or surname only; or both together; a father's or mother's forename only; and even just on the mother's maiden name.
Like before, the Year Range can also be used if you have a fair idea what years the births took place.
In other words - just play about with it and enter the names you think are most likely to be on the record.
[and best to always keep a very open mind on how any name is spelled]
Jack
