Elizabeth Harper.....

Post by garibaldired » Sat Dec 03, 2005 8:35 pm

Hi Everyone,

It's me again with my Harpers! What a headache they are!
This time it's Elizabeth Harper born c1854 (no birth record) in Cleish to James and Hannah (Dobie) Harper. I can only find her on the 1861 census with the rest of her family in Cleish. After this I lose her! Since I don't where she is it's difficult to rule out anyone in the list of Harper marriages. There is presumably no way of searching on SP with her mother's maiden name?

Any suggestions will be gratefully received! :)
Meg

First question.

Do you know if she survived to a later date?

First answer, no! However all the other 9 did so I'm guessing she might have too!

First suggestion, then :!:

Before looking further for her later on, descendants etc., do a death search on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Set the year of birth at 1854 +/-2 or 3 years. If that doesn't help, reset the +/- to 5, - there may not be that many results to look at.

David,

No death for an Elizabeth Harper between 1861 (when she appears at home on the census) and 1871.
Run out of credits for now but will follow your advice as you are right there aren't many EH deaths.
Thanks :)

Hi Meg
Just a thought - just because she is not with the family in 1871 does not mean she has definately died between 1861-1871.

Remember the census is only a "snapshot" of one night. She could be elsewhere. Several times now I've found kids with their granny, aunt, uncle, married big sister etc. But given that she is about 17 by 1871 she may well have left home and be working....anywhere!

There seem to be 4 matches on SP for an Elizabeth Harper aged 16-18 in the whole of Scotland in the 1871 - could she maybe be one of these?

Best wishes
Lesley

And I notice that one of these is in Fife Meg so that would probably be your first bet.

All my Kinross ancestors gradually moved to Fife over the years as it's only a few miles away.

Good Luck!

Thanks both of you. I think you're probably right about the Fife one; I do have some evidence of her siblings in that area later.

Just to let you all know. I have found her death in Limekilns (?) Dunfermline in 1875 aged 21.
Always makes me sad when I find an early death like this. The daughetrs of this family don't seem to have been as lucky as the sons.

Hi Meg
Glad to hear you have found her in Limekilns, but sad to hear she died young. Limekilns is on the south coast of Fife, next door to Charlestown, both fall within Dunfermline Parish.

Try

for more pictures and info on the town.
