Good afternoon
A warm welcome to the TS site.
Not much to offer I'm afraid, but did wonder if you had seen the death on Scotlands People in 1863 in Kirkudbright of a Margaret HUNTER/GRIERSON?
There might be some helpful information on that.
Have you actually got James Hunter's death cert. extract, with the names of both his parents? Scotlands People also has a death for a Margaret HUNTER/HUTCHISON in 1897 in Dumfries.
Best wishes
Catriona

Catriona, Thank you so much for your response. I have James Hunter's record from the GRO. At the time of his death he was a widower. The Margaret Hunter/ Hutchison you found was his daughter. This is much appreciated as I had not come across that fact. Robert is my enigma as there is no spouse listed on the GRO. I know he was a lighthouse keeper and was deceased in 1867. James died at Southerness. I did see a lighthouse in Southerness online, not sure if it is the same one. Southerness appears to be a vacation / holiday area now. Robert was born Glencairn. Somehow one of the families was employed at the Dumfrieshire Press when John MacDiarimid was editor, from a scant note that someone wrote. Any info or help is greatly appreciated. I am at a loss with Margaret Grierson also. There were a few Margaret Grierson's born in the area at that time.
Thanks again for your response. Diane

Hi Diane
No wall breaking news I'm afraid but maybe a few bits that you might not have. I've been scrounging through the BIVRI disks and have the following list of birth records for the children of James and Margaret. These list both birth dates and christening dates......
HUNTER, Robert Christening
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 29 Nov 1813
Christening Date: 4 Dec 1813 Recorded in: Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
Father: James HUNTER
Mother: Margaret GREIRSON
Source: FHL Film 1068032 Dates: 1737 - 1854
HUNTER, Barbara Christening
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 28 Jan 1816
Christening Date: 31 Jan 1816 Recorded in: Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
Father: James HUNTER
Mother: Margaret GREIRSON
Source: FHL Film 1068032 Dates: 1737 - 1854
HUNTER, James Christening
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 11 Apr 1821
Christening Date: 15 Apr 1821 Recorded in: Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
Father: James HUNTER
Mother: Margaret GREIRSON
Source: FHL Film 1068032 Dates: 1737 - 1854
HUNTER, James Christening
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 11 Apr 1821
Christening Date: 13 Apr 1821 Recorded in: Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
Father: James HUNTER
Mother: Margaret GRIERSON
Source: FHL Film 1068032 Dates: 1737 - 1854
HUNTER, Jane Christening
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 10 Sep 1823
Christening Date: 19 Sep 1823 Recorded in: Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
Father: James HUNTER
Mother: Margaret GRIERSON
Source: FHL Film 1068032 Dates: 1737 - 1854
HUNTER, Margaret Christening
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 22 Jan 1827
Christening Date: 17 Feb 1827 Recorded in: Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
Father: James HUNTER
Mother: Margaret GRIERSON
Source: FHL Film 1068032 Dates: 1737 - 1854
HUNTER, Thomas Christening
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 27 Jun 1829
Christening Date: 10 Jul 1829 Recorded in: Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
Father: James HUNTER
Mother: Margaret GRIERSON
Source: FHL Film 1068032 Dates: 1737 - 1854
Now you'll notice that there are actually two records for James but I feel it surely must be one and the same person. The mother's surname spelling is altered and the Christening Date is different...but all else is identical. Perhaps someone with more experience than I would care to comment on this type of anomaly
And now a further question for you.....you say you have the death record of James in 1867 in Kirkbean....but I'm not clear whether this states who his parents were???? I'm assuming it has Robert as father (or if not how do you know who is father is???) From the BIVRI disks there are several couples that might qualify for further research from the Dumfries area with children born during a 5 year span either side of 1792......they include....
Robert Hunter/Helen McGladdary
Robert Hunter/Jean Wightman
Robert Hunter/Margaret McCall
Robert Hunter/Margaret (Pegy) Brown
and there are also 3 births to a just plain Robert Hunter...
1. James Hunter chr 15 July 1792 (the one you are claiming as yours)
2. Jean Hunter chr 3 April 1796 in Hoddam Dumfries
3. John Hunter chr 17 July 1797 in Hoddam Dumfries
Like I said...no wall breaking evidence but maybe this could be helpful in some small way.
Best wishes
Jean

Jean, Thankyou so much. Some of the info I had. Jame's Hunter's death certificate does not list a mother only Robert. I can take the lead on trying the siblings of James. Grierson and Greirson spellings seemed to be interchanged at that time - according to Grierson researchers. Robert I have born in Glencairn. Is that near Hoddam? Thanks, Diane

Hi Diane
Glencairn is described as a parish in West Dumfriesshire 8 miles southwest of Thornhill Station. Contains Moniaive.
Hoddom(sic) is described as a parish in South Dumfriesshire. Contains Ecclefechan.
Town of Dumfries is actually somewhere halfway between these two locations.
Again...not much help!
Oh yes...one other thing....I roamed about in the IGI some after writing my post last night and found quite a few submittals for the birth/christening of a James Hunter. I don't have the complete list here but there were some minor discrepancies amongst them but one point was the father named as Robert and a mother named as Jenat (or some such spelling...going on memory here
) Kerr. It might be interesting for you to follow up with the FHL folks as to who made the submittals. Just a thought.......
Best wishes
Jean

Re: hunter grierson.....
Well these are old posts so don't know if anyone is still interested. Have been compiling my family tree on Ancestry and happened to come across this site. The Margaret Hunter who married John Hutchison were my great great grandparents. I come from Dumfries and am very familiar with Southerness and its lighthouse. I was contacted by a genealogist in 2003 looking for a living relative in Scotland for a client in the USA. Turned out myself and my brother were the only 2 he could find. Mike Tracy (the guy from the US) was descended from the Hunters of Southerness lighthouse and he's actually written a book about it. He also visited Southerness around that time although I couldn't meet with him as I was overseas. He provided me with a lot of information about that side of the family. I live in the US now.
