William Walker - South Leith.....

Post by caraid » Sun Dec 04, 2005 8:33 pm

Hi Folks
William Walker was my 3rd g Grandfather, but I've lost him  I'm not sure when he was born, or where but he Married Janet Sim(s) 6 dec 1838 in South Leith. She was Ch. 20 Nov 1820 in Dunbar and Died 14 Apr 1856 in S. Leith. William Walker signed as Husband. They had children Jane 1839, George 1841, William Sim 1843, Isabella 1845, James Edward 1850, Jessie 1851 and Andrew C 1853(my line). William was a Seaman in the M.S. and he wasn't at home in the 1841 Census, I have no access to 1851 and when I looked for him on the 1861, (I'm sure its him) he is down as
WILLIAM WALKER, Head, Marr, 43, Seaman Merch .Serv., born Cockenzie
MARION do. Wife, Marr, 26, Seamans Wife, born S Leith
GEORGE do, Son, Unm, 20, Engineman Steamboat, born S Leith
ISABELLA do, Dau, Unm, 15, born S Leith
ANDREW do. Son, Unm, 7, Scholar, born S Leith
JAMIMA do, Dau, 3, born S Leith
JOAN BAXTER do, Dau, 4mth, born S Leith
GEORGE ROBERTSON do, Son, 6, born Dunbar
I can find no Marraige for William and Marion, although I have the births of Jemima in 1858, father William Walker seaman, mother Marion Walker m.s. Main and the birth of Joan Baxter in 1860, father William Walker seaman merch ser., mother Marion Walker m.s. Maney. I suspect George Robertson may have been born in 1854 as I can find no trace of him.
I have traced George born 1841 and of course Andrew who was with him in 1871 for the census, but cannot find any of the rest of the family. william was Dec. when Andrew married Sarah Liston in 1876.
If anyone can put me back on the scent  I would be very grateful
p.s. sorry post is so long but i thought more details I could give the better

Thanks
Caraid

Hi Caraid,

Regarding Your William, I`ve noticed that between 1860 - 1876, there were 21 deaths for William Walker`s, however there is one which seems to fit the bill, although I have`nt looked at it yet:-
1871 : William Walker : aged 53 : South Leith : Marine Register : Minor Records : GROS Data 018/MR 0153.
It looks as if William was married twice, (1) Janet Sim (2) Marion Main, have you checked Jemima`s birth in 1858 to get the marriage date.
You`ll have the info that his Son George (b.1841) was residing at 30 Cables Wynd in Leith

Yours
John

Hi Skene Dhu
Many thanks for that info, I had searched between 1861 to 1877 in Edinburgh City for William Walkers death and that one didn't show up in my searches. Now Scotlands People site has gone down for maintenance so I will just have to wait. I do have George's info, he married Johan Baxter in dec 1861, and I also have Andrew's info too.
The thing I couldn't find was a marraige for Marion and William. Williams first wife died in 1856, but maybe they didn't get "officially " married. I have the certs. for both Jemima & Joan too.

Hi Andy
I do have all that info but thanks for looking. George and Johan are living at Riddles Close, S Leith in 1871 and with them is brother Andrew. At the moment I'm having a few probs with Scotlands People in Viewing images on my Home Computer so havn't been able to search for the Death that Skene Dhu pointed out, but Marion seems to have disapeared in the 1871 census along with the girls.
Thanks again

Hello Caraid,

although the 1871 Marine Register death looks promising, the index does not link it to South Leith, and the image is not available on SP.

Joan died in 1862, aged 2, of smallpox. Her parents were named as William and Mary (not Marion as in the census) Walker, ms Main.

I am looking at the possibility that some of the family moved to England, but I have no further news on that at present.

Regards,

John

hi Sporran,
Thanks for that, I have now downloaded Joan's DC. How do you know that the index does not link to South Leith? Where does it index to.

Hello Caraid,

all that I was stating was that you can find the death of a William Walker in 1871 on the SP site, but the district is Marine Register with no mention of South Leith. The image is not available on SP so there is no way of checking online. The other John (Skene Dhu) may have seen the fiche of the death entry in New Register House and obtained additional information from it.

Regards,

John
