Visiting Scotland.....

Post by David Wells » Thu Dec 15, 2005 9:59 am

Hi,

I am planning to visit Scotland in August next year and want to spend a week at New Register House and also attend the Tattoo. Can anyone recommend a good B&B relatively close to both venues.

I also plan to spend some time in Motherwell and I believe they now have a train service between Motherwell and Edinburgh.

There seem to be a range of options for rail travel between Edinburgh and Motherwell, a few direct and a few via Glasgow, - see http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/search/

Hi David

If you would consider self-catering can recommend "Edinlet apartments"in Old Fishmarket Close, Edinburgh. An American cousin stayed in one of their properties a couple of months ago and I visited her - very good accomodation on one of the old closes off Edinburgh High Street (Royal Mile). Strolling distance to NRH and the castle and very atmospheric part of town. Great location to be in during Edinburgh Festival. No idea how much she paid and imagine these apartments will be in huge demand during August but if interested google for Edinlet - she did leave me a card with their details (but can't find it right now)..........

For Edinlet see http://www.selfcatering-directory.co.uk ... g-8103.htm and http://www.edinlet.com/ - looks like there's another apartment now just off the Grassmarket.

Hello David
The last time I went up to Edinburgh on the train I stayed in an hotel only to discover in the morning that they didn’t serve breakfast. I was miffed. I can’t survive without breakfast. There is more to this but I must be brief.
The next time I went up I took the car and drove over the water to Fife and stayed in a splendid pub/hotel in Aberdour. The food was good and the beer was excellent. In the morning I walked the two minutes, yes two minutes, to the railway station and caught one of several trains per hour to Edinburgh. This journey takes about twenty minutes and you get to travel over, or should I say through, THE Bridge.
If I had stayed in Edinburgh it would have taken longer than this just to park the car.
There are several places you can stay along the Fife Riviera, some further, some closer like North Queensferry which is about ten minutes away. For me as a mere country boy, this good way to do Edinburgh. It can be a pretty stifling place in August.
Just an option you might like to consider.

……did I say Fife Riviera? Sorry Ibathgate, that was remiss of me. I meant to say, ancient Kingdom of Fife occupying the fertile lands between the firths of Forth and Tay with its beautiful coastline scattered with picturesque fishing villages, otherwise known as the Scottish Rivera, which lie just to the east of Dunfermline, Scotland’s ancient capital and the place that Mary Stewart, Queen of Scots called home.

Hi Malcolm
I guess it s a case of when you live in an area you just don't quite see it in the same way as visitors do! To me, describing the nearby south coast of Fife as a "Riviera" was funny enough to have me falling off my seat  ! I've certainly not heard it referred to as that and assumed you were being funny ...maybe you weren't:?
....apologies if you were indeed not being funny.
Best wishes
