GROS data number.....

Post by paddyscar » Mon Jan 02, 2006 3:08 am

A search for a death registry for John Kelly returns 3 possibilities

1922 KELLY JOHN M 51 CATHCART GLASGOW CITY/LANARK/RENFREW 633/B0 0225

Is this GROS data reference telling me something different from the normal GROS data references? I'm referring to the B within the reference. I've only seen all numbers previously.

Thanks,
Frances

Hi Frances,

The "B" is nothing obscure. There are a lot of A's, and B's and a few C's within the GROS registration district numbering system. The letters are added when a new RD is created and there is no vacant number for it.

In the case of Cathcart, the RD number was 560 from 1855 to 1912. Due to some boundary change, Cathcart was transferred from Renfrewshire (RDs 559 to 575) to Lanarkshire (RDs 621 to 660) from 1913. Within each county, the RDs are numbered in alphabetical order of the RD name. Cathcart had to be slotted in between Carstairs (633) and Covington and Thankerton (634). So Carstairs was renumbered 633a and Cathcart became 633b. In the indexing system used by SP (and DIGROS within NRH), these became 633/A0 and 633/B0 respectively.

In 1927, Cathcart RD was transferred into Glasgow, and became RD 644/24 (the 24th RD within the City of Glasgow, 644) and on the SP indexing system it will have become 644/24 (no letter).

Where there is no letter or number appended to the RD number, two zeros are used for that part of the computer index. So up to 1912, Cathcart (RD 560) would show up in the index as 560/00.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Re: GROS sub-district letters

Hello Frances,

letters for sub-districts are not rare, and do not mean anything different to the numbers. There is a list of districts on the GROS site at http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/index.html , and look under "Our records". Cathcart was 633/B from 1913 to 1926. For consistency, the SP site uses 2 alphanumeric characters for sub-districts, so it becomes 633/B0 on the SP results.

Regards,

John

Thanks very much, Andrew and John.

I've only looked up 3 births and this is my second death reg, so in my inexperience, I was hoping that it was an 'oddity' that was speaking to me.

Since I've narrowed the list of 12 to 3 possibilities, I'll carry on from here.
