Jane ( Jean ) MACKAY.....

Jane married John MELVILLE ( sic) on Feb. 22 , 1828 in Portgower , Sutherland but I have no idea of her parents or birth.
Children were Catherine b. 1829 , Donald b. 1830 , Hugh b. 1831 , Jane b. 1834 , Isabella , my G grandmother ) b. 1836 and Roberta b. 1839. Jane died between census of 1841 & 51.
Any suggestions welcomed.

Where was Jane in the '41 census? Did it give any indication of her birthplace? (probably just a "yes, in county" or "no, not in county" type of indication ) That might help pin her down a bit?

The family was living in West Helmsdale, Loth. The OPR from GRO gave Portgower as their wedding location although other sources state Loth. No indication of exact birthplace unfortunately on the 41 census.

Have you tried working back from the children. Marriage or death records would perhaps give some clues for their mums surname. If they married or died in Scotland their records would be available at scotlandspeople.gov.uk and, although they don't have images up yet for OPR at least it would give confirmation of marriage or birth.

Hi Deb,

West Helmsdale was only about a mile from Portgower, but not in the same parish. West Helmsdale was in Kildonan paish, and Portgower was in Loth parish, both in the county of Sutherland (at least that's how it looks comparing two maps here).

Go to www.streetmap.co.uk and input Portgower, then search. On the resulting map, click on the arrow in the north-east corner. The next map will show both locations. Each square on that map is 1km x 1km.

These locations are over 200 miles north of Edinburgh - about a 4 hour drive nowadays.

I just checked out all the Jean/Jane McKAYs that I'd gathered and one couple George and Katherine caught my attention so I'll concentrate on them.
The family didn't seem to follow the usual pattern for naming their children but I have only recently found that Catherine was their first daughter so this changes things.

So as ages were rounded down in the '41 that makes both of them between 35-40 years old, so looks like Jane was born around 1801 - 1806 ish, if my arithmetic is correct (which it often isn't! ).
A qucik look on the IGI seems to come up with a few Jane McKays born in Sutherland during those years.

Yes, I had narrowed the long list of Jane/Jean McKAY /MACKAYs from the IGI to 16 but nothing has panned out from them. Yes , many of them are submissions , unfortunately.

BTW , John MELVILLE was born June 20th , 1800/1801
