Hi everyone,
I'm purplefrankie and I'm new!!
I'm sure I'll be on here loads as I've only just started researching and have hit a brick wall!
The names I'm researching are Jamieson, Humphrey, Murray, Donnelly, Docherty, Conville and Smith!
I seem to have come to a full stop at Smith.
My Great Grandfather was listed on his marriage certificate as Robert Alexander Smith and he was 23 when he married in 1909. His father is listed as Robert Alexander Smith, a deceased coachpainter. His mother is listed as Isabella Smith nee McIntosh.
I've been unable to find a birth certificate for either Robert Alexander Smith, or a marriage certificate for Robert Alexander Smith and Isabella McIntosh.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Like I said, I'm new to this so need all the help I can get.
Thanks in advance,
purplefrankie

Hello purplefrankie
Welcome to TalkingScot!
In just reading your question I wonder if you've searched for the death of Isabella McIntosh Smith yet? On SP with the ability to use maiden and married surnames it helps the odds of finding the right person. It looks like you're saying that she was still living when your grgrandfather married in 1909? Is so then you can search for her death after this date right up til 1955. If you find it you'll at least know her parents names (hopefully!). Do you have any idea if your gr grandfather had any siblings?
I looked quickly in the lowland 1881 census but didn't find Robert Smith coach painter. There were a few other Smith's as coach painter though. And there were at least two couples of Robert and Isabella as husband and wife. You didn't mention where your grgrandfather married????
I'm sure we can help you sort it all out
Best wishes
Jean

Re: Robert Alexander Smith
Hello purplefrankie,
he was a little older than he stated on his wedding (ages are often adjusted to be closer together), and he was born in 1884 at Glasgow (Milton). The birth entry is very informative for your future searches.
Regards,
John

Hello all
Just a reminder that there appears to be a problem on SP searching SR Female deaths using married and other names, but it should be sorted soon

Hi everyone,
Many thanks for your help.
I went on SP and found Robert Alexander Smiths birth certificate.
I had naively thought he must have been born in 1885 or 1886 and therefore missed him as he was born in 1884!
Also he was born out of wedlock which explains why I couldn't find a marriage certificate for his parents.
Once again, thanks for helping me,
Suzanne

Re: informative birth certificate
Hello all,
in case people were wondering what was so informative on the birth entry that Suzanne has now found, the column for parents' details had:
Alexander Smith Coach Painter (Journeyman)
Isabella McIntosh (Housekeeper) Widow of James Lawson Joiner (Master) who died at Manchester in September 1877.
Regards,
John
