Clelland & Gardener Family- Paisley , Renfrw.....
Here is an interesting thing I came accross and wondered what it means.
My ancestor Ann Gardener married James Clelland in 1818 in Paisley. Ann named one of her sons William Fleming Cleland born in 1833. I figure Fleming was a maiden name. Well , Ann's sister Bethia married a man named William Fleming in 1829. Why would she name her son after her sister's husband?

Hi,
Quite often the middle name was that of the witnesses at the christening or possibly they were god parents.

It may be nothing to do with naming the kid after his aunt's husband.
FLEMING is sufficiently common that it could be pure coincidence, or it could be marriage with a cousin, - far from uncommon, - i.e. FLEMING is a maiden name somewhere close in the tree, and Ann's sister Bethia married a desendant from a parallel line.
You pay your money and you take your choice ! <g>
Seriously, to prove or disprove it one way or another will require a bit of research...............

All good points. I suppose I should try to get a copy of the baptism. Better start warming up the credit card as I have a list of items to get that is getting mighty long!

Hi Kristin,
Just to say that baptisms in the OPRs don't usually give much more than the child's name and the parents.
Some early ones only have the father mentioned (as though the wife had nothing to do with the birth...
)
But on the other hand some do have more info.
Maybe order in the relevant films at your local LDS Family Centre and have a look?
Did father James CLELLAND (Ann's hubby) die a fairly young man? do you know his occupation?

Actually he did die a fairly young man. I have Anne in the 1841 Census in Paisley with all the kids. The last child was born in 1839 (and James is the father) but Ann is a widow in the 1841 census. I am assuming he died bewteen 1839-1841. I have yet to find an occupation. Ann was born in 1799 and they married in 1818. I am assuming if they were close in age, James died in his early forties.

Hi Kristin,
I know Ann (as Agness again) was still living in 1851 (as a widow); did she survive past 1855 for a DC?
And do you have MCs or DCs for any of James' & Ann's children?
I'd be hoping they would all give his occupation!
Jack
ps, the 1841 census doesn't actually say widow for Ann, but as you say there is no hubby James with her.

I am going to root around for some items on SP today. Have to wait for the baby to take a nap so I can get an hour of quiet time.
Do you have the details of the 1851 Census for Ann Clelland? CAn I be cheeky and ask for them?
