John Ferguson.....

Post by bobbyinmelbourne » Sat Jan 14, 2006 8:17 am

Can anyone help find my GGF John Ferguson, born abt 1844 perhaps in Shotts, Lks? I have his Marriage cert. [ to Rachel Grierson, 1866],and Death cert[1918]but since I can't find his birth cert. or info on his parents, Walter Ferguson and Jane Pettigrew probably also born in Lanarkshire, I'm stuck.
There's some stuff on LDS about Walter and Jane but
as most is wrong, the rest is unreliable. Can't find them on 1861 census either.
Anyone with a magic wand?????[sorry, I'm rereading Harry Potter]

Hi Bobby
I found this on IGI but you probably already know about these children:

1. AGNES FERGUSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 25 AUG 1857 Shotts, Lanark, Scotland (extract)

2. Jane Rae Ferguson - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 1862 Carluke, Lanark, Scotland (submission)

Then there are quite a few mentions of children for whom the parents are
Walter Fergusson and Mrs. Jean Fergusson and given that many of these seem to be in Shotts, based on the above extract they certainly would seem to be possibles, but as you've noted, all but one are submissions, so careful checking would be needed.

1. Isabell OR Twin Ferguson - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: About 1842 Shotts Parish, , Lanark, Scotland

2. John Ferguson - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: About 1844 Shotts Parish, , Lanark, Scotland

3. Thomas Ferguson - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: About 1846 Shotts Parish, , Lanark, Scotland

4. Walter Ferguson Jr. - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: About 1849 Shotts Parish, , Lanark, Scotland

5. James Ferguson - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: About 1850 Shotts Parish, , Lanark, Scotland

6. Isabell OR Twin Ferguson - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Death: About 1902

7. Ivy OR Twin Ferguson - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: About 1842 Shotts Parish, , Lanark, Scotland

8. Ivy OR Twin Ferguson - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Death: About 1902

9. John Ferguson - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Death: About 1914

10. Thomas Ferguson - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Death: About 1911

11. Walter Ferguson Jr. - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Death: About 1912

12. James Ferguson - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Death: About 1920

13. AGNES FERGUSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 25 AUG 1857 Shotts, Lanark, Scotland

14. Jane Rae Ferguson - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 1862 Carluke, Lanark, Scotland

As many of them mention possible death dates (somone obviously hasn't been on SP - they are all "about" dates!) I'd be tempted to use the free search facility on SP to see if any of them are correct.

Your GGF John Ferguson should be in the 1851, so a short (I hope!) wait and you should be able to look for him on SP with his parents when the '51 comes online.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Bobby
I had a quick look on the 1881 but nothing obvious - I thought Rachel would be relatively easy to find, but no...do you know when she died?

If the Walter jnr born above is yours then this looks like him in the 1881

Can't find any sign of John though but I'm pretty sure this is Walter and Jean with a couple of children living close by.

Jane Pettigrew Ferguson

Post by nelmit » Sat Jan 14, 2006 1:14 pm

Hello again,

Still can't find John but I ran a quick search on SP and thought you may be interested in a 1904 death of Jane Ferguson, born 1811, death in Shotts. I can't cross search (and need my last few credits at the moment so can't look) but there is also a death of Jane Pettigrew, born 1811, in Shotts the same year. So I think this is your Jane.

Regards,
Annette M

Hi Bobby,
Here's young John with his family in 1851; couldn't look at the 1861 as the film at the library can't be found.
But John isn't with them - brief details for father Walter in 1861 below.

Thanks so much all of you; that'll keep me busy for a while.
Have any of you ever been to Shotts? The green bus to Edinburgh went through that way and all I can remember is a grey place - not that Wishaw was very colourful!
Thanks again from sunny Melbourne

Quick addition - I haven't taken in all the info you've given, but one thing I'm really glad about, that some names haven't carried through
IVY and [poor kid] Willie Mina

Hi Bobby

I suppose Shotts is "rather a grey place". When I went however, I was wearing the pink-tinted specs of "seeing where my ancestors came from".:)

Did wonder why the owner of the B&B remarked: "First time I've ever heard of someone choosing to spend their holiday in Shotts." :D "Especially when they come from Paris!"

Best wishes

Hi Bobby

A friend of the family named there youngest son Ivie (I think that was spelling) he was born in Aberdeen in the late 1950's early 60, he was my youngest brothers pal. When my mother had to go to work, he had to stay with that family a couple of doors down after school.
Oh he ended up as an RSM in Army and about 6 foot  .
