Hi Stravaig
I presume you have looked at dumgal.gov.uk ?
I had a look in the 1851 census there and could find no Mc/MacQuarreys/McQuarries.
I tried with John, Mary, Jane & Rebecca in all parishes with no result.
The only result was
Name: McQUARRIE , Laughlan
Address: 22 Back Street, North Side, Village of Gatehouse(866)
Parish: Girthon
Relationship: daughter of Rose Ann McQuarrie
Marital Status: unmarried
Occupation: WEAVER steamloom
Age: 31
Born: born Glasgow Lanarks
Household No: 4/40
Name: McQUARRIE , Rose Ann
Address: 22 Back Street, North Side, Village of Gatehouse(866)
Parish: Girthon
Relationship: head of household
Marital Status: widow
Occupation: PAUPER/cotton reeler
Age: 60
Born: born Glasgow Lanarks
Household No: 4/40

Occupation: COTTON REELER/pauper

the occupations were interesting though!
Sorry I couldn't be of more help

The instructions to the enumerators in 1841 were that the ages of those over 15 were to be rounded down to the nearest 5 year, so that John could be naything up to 39, or even older is his age was wrongly given for any reason, then rounded down. Most likely, however, that John was born between 1801 and 1806
His son John died in Gatehouse, as you probably know, indicating that the family remained there for a few years. The lack of an 1855 or later death for John senior would tend to suggest that he died in 1854 or earlier.

1851 census gatehoue of fleet,
hi russell, thanks for your lookup in dumgal .gov if you look under mcquarry youll find mary in i think swan st with her children, john having died in 1849, they worked in birtwhistles cotton mill, interestingly marys two sisters margaret and agnes alexander are also living with her, margaret was a steamloomweaver and agness is a carder .the cotton mill at that time would have been the main employer.i wonder if john came down from lanarkshire from the mills there.
jean.
ps they did change the spelling from the y ending to ie, my granpa and hid brother laughlan both used ie .

Hi Stravaig
I think I need to renew my dumgal link. Several times it has come up with either 'no results found' or needed two or three entries to come up with only partial results! Its annoying when you know your people were there to be told 'no they weren't!!!'
I have been searching for ROAN (or Rowan if your in Ayrshire) and sometimes they appeared to have 'flitted' while my back was turned. Very odd.
Have you had a look at spatial-literacy.org/UCLnames/default.aspx ? Its a surname pattern and migration project.
I put in McQuarrie and the distribution it gave was fascinating. Its only recently on-line and is suffering an overload of nosy people like me at the moment !
By the way Paisley is another area where cotton weaving was a major industry for a long time. Just mentioned it because I had a friend called McQuarrie whos family were from the Paisley area
Bye

Hello Stravaig
This won’t help you directly but one of my favourite places in Scotland is a small island in the Inner Hebrides called Ulva where they raise and sell their own oysters. The only public telephone box is used to grow tomatoes. However, Ulva has the most concentrated of rare wildlife in all of Scotland and is the ancestral home of the MacQuarrie’s. The MacQuarries claim Kinship with St Columba himself and perhaps the most famous of them all is one Lachlan MacQuarie. You may have heard of him He became the first Governor of New South Wales and Australians still make pilgrimages to his mausoleum on the Island of Mull.
There is more to this but during the late eighteenth century, Lachlan sold the island to settle his debts. Whilst most of the crofting clan remained they would later fall foul to the highland clearances. This aberration in our social history also coincided with a potato blight and a collapse in the kelp market. There is more to this too.
This brings us to the early or mid nineteenth century, where I think your search begins as most of the displaced people of Ulva would have been shipped to Glasgow initially and then beyond.
Given the reverence given to the MacQuarrie name I think there must be a body of them somewhere who should be able to help you more. I will see if I can turn up some more information for you
MM
PS You can read something about the generosity of Lachlan MacQuarrie in the writings of Dr Johnson and James Boswell, 1773

HI MALCOLM, THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY, YES I KNOW JUST WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT ULVA,IVE WALKED THE WHOLE ISLAND ,IT MUST HAVE BEEN AN IDYLLIC WAY OF LIFE BEFORETHE HARD TIMES CAME,ITS SAID THAT AT THE CLEARING TIMES THEY LIVED FOR A TIME ON THE SHORE LINE ,LIVING OFF THE KELP THAT USED TO BE THEIR LIVING, THE MOTHERS TIED THEIR CHILDREN TO STAKES ABOVE THE SHORE LINE TO STOP THEM BEING SWEPT AWAY, HARD TIMES,THEY NAMED THE PLACE STARVATION POINT, IT MUST HAVE BEEN A HARD PARTING FROM SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PLACE!..... for some reason i had it in my head that you you were in Australia. I didn't realise until i pressed the button that you are in Scotland. You probably know more about Ulva and it's people than I do.
Sorry. I must read what it says on the tin more carefully.
I planned to spend a night out on Gometra Last year but the day before I cracked a couple of ribs on the rocks and had too much pain.
Anyway, just in case you don't know this,I was talking to the Curater at Tobermorey. She told me that there was written material about the former residents of Ulva that is not generally available to public scrutiny. You can look at this stuff by appointment.
It's not helping you with your Glasgow end but I thought you should know out of completeness and to consider the likely possibility the the person you are looking for could have come from Ulva.
