The Roots Chat forum thinks you folks are the best. I have received a lot of help from them so far but now at a standstill. Here is what I have in my search to move back another generation and/or find the birth or death of Joseph Fadzen (my ggg grandfather):
Joseph McFadzen on 1841 census, b Ireland 1821, a male servant in Litterick Family in Mochrum Landberrick (I know he eventually marries Jane Litterick).
Joseph McFadzean on 1851 census, b Mochrum Wgt in 1821, agricultural laborer.
Joseph Fadzen on 1861 census, b. Scotland in 1822.
Finally I know he moved from Wigtown to Durham between 1851 and 1855 and that he died between 1861 and 1871, likely in Durham because that is where they were living. I am inclined to think the birthplace listed by Farmer Litterick on the 1841 census is the erroneous one but I cannot find the birth of Joseph, the death of Joseph or anything to tell me his parents names.
I have ordered various records from Scotlands People but they have not arrived yet. One of those was Joseph's marriage certificate.
Any help or suggestions????
Rose

Hi & welcome to TalkingScot I too think we are the best & I know somebody will be able to help.
You said you have ordered certificates is that because they are pre 1855?
If he married after 1855 his parents names should be there.
The birthplace he may have changed himself for several reasons e.g born Ireland but moved to Scotland as a baby/young child. There was still
a lot of racial prejudice against the Irish & having Scotland as your birthplace instead may have been expedient for him.
The name change does present more challenges as to narrowing down the number of Joseph McFadzen, fadzen but not a huge one.
good luck!

It's a pity that you didn't post here before you ordered the 1841 marriage "certificate" as it's not a certificate in terms of the information in a civil marriage record from 1855 onward, but an entry in the OPR, possibly as simple as the two names, and unlikely to include the names of any of the parents of the couple, - you are fortunate to know the name of her father from the census info.Rose224 wrote:Unfortunately married 1841. I ordered the cert just because I am desparate and because I want proof of as many facts as I can get. I will appreciate any help anyone can give me.
Unfortunately, an English death certificate is unlikely to show the names of the parents.
