I have the name ROP which appears as a mother's name on a death cert of a gx4 granny. I can't find any trace of this name anywhere so am now at a brick wall. The gggg granny died in SHOTTS in 1896 at the age of 74, her parents were John Young and Janet Rop. Has anyone came across this name on a census perhaps? Thanks for any help.
Surname ROP anyone??.....

Surname ROP anyone??.....
Hi, Happy New Year everyone

The free surname search at www.scotlandspeople.go.uk gives
Census 1861 61
Census 1871 153
Census 1881 2
Census 1891 5
Census 1901 97
Old Parish Records Births & Christenings 1553 - 1854 0
Old Parish Records Banns & Marriages 1553 - 1854 1
Statutory Register Births 1855 - 1905 0
Statutory Register Marriages / Banns 1855 - 1930 0
Statutory Register Deaths 1855 - 1955 0
Wills & Testaments 1513 - 1901 2
These numbers don't make any sense, as if all these people in the censuses were born/married/died in Scotland, then where the heck are the records.
Quite simply, the surname Rop doesn't exist, - it's a mistranscription of Roƒs ...........
Looks like census enumerators were more prone to write Roƒs rather than Ross.

If you check the Free surname index on ScotlandsPeople you will see no Rops on the OPR or BMD but a few in the Censuses.

Re Rop
Thanks for both replies, I didn't think to try Ross, I tried Rob and Rope (!) with no luck. I will let you know if I find it as it may be of use to someone in the future. Thanks again.
