McNab.....

Post by Salopian » Wed Jan 25, 2006 9:57 am

I have been trying to find Thomas McNab born approx 1840, somewhere in Scotland (my aunt told me Pitlochery area, but she now has passed on) His father was Robert McNab he was listed on Thomas's marriage certificate ( in Liverpool) as Gentleman, no mothers name mentioned.
The only Thomas I found in Denny, Perthshire about that date, died a batchelor.
I would appreciate any help at all, as I have the rest of the McNabs (my side) waiting on my efforts to solve the problem.
Cheers
Andrea :)

Hullo Andrea

Welcome to Talking Scot! Hope you will find help in your research.

Perhaps you could answer a few questions, the answers to which might give clues to how best to help you.

Where does Thomas' birth date come from? His mariage certificate? Approx 1840? Do you know his occupation?
Since he married in Liverpool, have you any reason to believe that he returned to Scotland at all? His wife's name?
Do you have names of any siblings? The names of his sons or daughters and their places of birth.

Hope you don't mind all these questions.
Best wishes

Hi Catrional...I have my ggrandfather and family listed on the 1881 and 1871 census, also I have his death certificate, he was 77 when he died on the 17th Feb 1917 in Wallasay, Cheshire.
He was a ships steward in Liverpool for the P.O. line.
Thomas and his wife lived in Liverpool after their marriage in 1872, then moved later across to Poulton cum Seacombe, Cheshire. His wife was Leonora Warner Clarke. She was from Leicester. Leonora died in 1905 aged 56.
Their children were:-
Isabel Eliza,(my grandmother)b. 1875
Leonora Beechey b. 1877
Robert Ernest b. 1879
Thomas Cope b. 1880
Frederick Clarke b. 1883
Norman b. 1886
They were all born in Walton, Liverpool.
I have the marriage details for all the children, but cant seem to find where Thomas was born in Scotland, or his father Robert McNab.
Thanks for your help
Andrea :)

Hullo Andrea

Thanks for all the information. I see that Thomas' age comes from three sources.

I had wondered about an extracted birth/christening on the International Genealogical Index

Thomas MCNAB b.14 SEP 1833; c 20 SEP 1833, Blair Atholl, Perth
Parents: Robert MCNAB and Isobel MCGLASHAN.

Birth date a few years out, but I was interested by the fact that your Thomas called his eldest daughter Isabel.

If you do a parent search on the IGI, you'll find that this particular Thomas had quite a few brothers and sisters.

Best wishes

Hi Catriona...I have found a Thomas McNab b. 1839 to Robert McNab & Isabella Rattray in Blairgowrie...I was thinking my grandmother would probably have been named after her fathers mother, also.
I put Thomas's name into the IGI search with those McNabs you mentioned but cant see any other children..what am I doing wrong?
Cheers

Andrea

The 1839 Thomas Mcnab you mentionned has, according to the IGI, Father Thomas McNab, Mother Isabella Rattray. A parent search reveals several children for this couple, but none for Robert Mcnab/Isabella Rattray.

Back to the drawing board? :)

Hi..youre right you know...lol..been on here too long and its hot and humid here...But how did you see how many children Robert and Isabel had on IGI?
I'm always going back to the drawing board, hopefully I might get a breakthrough eventually...

Andrea

Hullo again!

Go to the IGI

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... _form=true

Fill in Father's Names; Mother's Names; Region.
Click on Search and Hey Presto! I hope :D

Thank you Catriona....
I found 8 children..great now all I have to do is prove it is him, even though there is an 7 year difference...I thought that with the marriage certificate I could find where he came from, no luck, only father mentioned...and on the death certificate nothing either. Found quite a number of cousins though, but they dont know anything either.
Will have to keep thinking...
Thank you for being patient.
Cheers
Andrea :)

Hi Andrea
Thomas McNab born approx 1840
Any chance of catching him in Scotland on the (1841) 1851 (both of these should be online soon) or 61 census(online already)? - his later marriage should give his father's name & occupation which could be cross checked with the census info.

Best wishes
Lesley
