Hi Wini
1.They may have had a William in 1796 who subsequently died and following male child born in 1800 was then named William and the same deal with the Marions. IF this is the case then the 2nd William would be your man. (later edit: but bear in mind some families did have two living kids with the same name, though I think its rare-ish...)
or
2. I wonder if for some reason due to maybe one parent belonging to one Parish and the other to another, or a move from one place to another that the children were christened in more than one Parish?
Generally speaking, as far as I'm aware, the OPR info deals with christenings, not births per se. If it were me, I'd be wanting to see the OPR films to see if that gave any more info - I think further investigation would be
needed!!
Sorry I can't offer a more "clear cut" suggestion!
Best wishes
Lesley
As these would all appear to be from GROS, not IGI, without further investigation I can only suggest at this point that :15/07/1798 William Wilson Gebbie -.Parents Thomas Gebbie/Isobell Smith

To follow on from what Lesley has said, it might be worth looking at the 1795 (31 December, so probably recorded in 1796) marriage in Kilmarnock of Thomas Gebbie and Isabella Smith. This might tell you if they were both from the same Parish.

I wouldn't agree about parents giving two children the same first name as "rarish" unless my family is the exception to the rule I can think of at least ten examples just of the top of my head & have no doubt that there are more.
If you are refering to two surviving children having the same name then I agree that is" rarish".

Unusual, yes, but not "rare-ish"lbathgate wrote:.....snipped .........(later edit: but bear in mind some families did have two living kids with the same name, though I think its rare-ish

It all depends on just how strictly the family stuck to the conventional naming pattern, and if, say, both parents and the father had the same name, then, potentially, there could be even be 3 sons of the same name (or daughters on that side !!).
So how was this handled?
Easy? ................
If the name was "Alexander", then there was an Alex, a Sandy, and an Ally, always assuming that there weren't middle names that came into play
I can quote you an Ulster family with four sons by the name of William, with three known by their middle name, but then that's a special situation as it wasn't a naming pattern that was involved

Gebbie Family-How can I tell
All I can say
Is Dearie, Dearie me
I have driven 800 Kms today so I will have a think and get back to you
Thanks for your advice.
I"ll be in trouble disrupting this thread but after I wrote the above.
I thought about a poem I learned when a fairly small wane
Ye've hurt ye're finger puir wee man
Ye're pinky, Dearie me,
now jist you haud yer finger
till I get my specs and see
Anyone any ideas of the rest of it?

I know this one well
number one son had to recite it for the School's Burns Afternoon 2 years ago!
Ye’ve hurt your finger?
Puir wee man!
Yer pinkie? Dearie me!
No, juist ye haud it that wey ‘till
I get my specs and see!
My, so it is – and there’s the skelf!
Noo, dinna greet nae mair.
See there – my needle’s gotten’t oot!
I’m shair that wasna sair?
And, noo, to mak it hale the morn,
Put on a wee bit saw,
And tie a bonnie hankie roun’t,
Noo, there now – rin awa’!
Yer finger sair ana a’? Ye rogue,
Ye’re only lettin’ on.
Weel, weel, then, - see now, there ye are,
Rowed up the same as John!
