Hello Everyone,
Who will tell me how children were named in Scotland? I have confused myself and cannot remember which grandparents came first.
Thank you for your help.

Hi Jen
The only evidence of a naming pattern i have is with all my William's
It doesnt seem to be the case with my others so far
I see you have Rankin on your list, were they originally from Banff ? i have a lot that migrated to Australia and New Zealand.

Don't forget that the Scots are good at giving their children the tradditional "family" names, and then calling them something else. I'm one of a long line of Catherines..... and we're all called something else - Kate, Katrina, Irene, Rene, Renee, Cate... just about everything, but not Cathy.
Adam/Aird/Bell/Beveridge/Clark/Davidson/Dunn/Millar/Morning/ McKinlay/McVake/McVickers/Pryde/Robertson..... and Smith!

Hello Tracey,
I actually have two Margaret Rankin but from different families!!
Margaret Rankin born abt. 1840 in Rothsey married Kevin Edward Smith in Katoomba New South Wales 28 Aug 1959. She married my second cousin.
The other born abt. 1750 in East Lothian married John Fairgrieve in East Lothian abt. 1775. She is my 5th great grandmother and is as far back as I am with her line.
REGARDING NAMING: Is there rhyme or reason to using middle names. My g.g.grandfather had the middle name of Thomson but I know one of his sisters also carried this middle name and another carried the name of Gilchrist.
Thanks once again for your help.
Jen.

The middle names I have tended to come from maiden names of grandmothers. Therefore Thomas Carson's mother in law was a McCulloch before marriage, and so one of his daugter's was named Margaret McCulloch Carson. His own mother had the maiden name Hyslop, so another daughter of Thomas' was Mary Hyslop Carson.
As for naming patterns...some of my families have strictly adhered to the pattern, others have used the same names but not in 'order', and others again totally disregarded family names. Some of mine also reused a name when a child died.
I guess it depended on the individual.
So I guess I am saying that names can be a clue....but there does not seem to always be a hard and fast rule about it.

Hi Nina
OK - you've got me interested now!....who is your Margaret McCulloch? Do you know her d.o.b? place of birth? And who was Thomas Carson's father-in-law?
Best wishes
Lelsey

I have had several MIDDLE NAMES which have been the surname of a sister's husband. Others, a first wife's maiden surname. And don't forget the Middle names which were those of the Dr, Minister, Midwife or politiacal figure.
Happy Searching
