David McCulloch.....

Post by Marg » Sat Feb 04, 2006 10:57 pm

Trying to locate birthplace and parents of GGGrandfather - David McCulloch

I do not have much information to begin with. I did have another researcher
take a look when she was at the GRO and she basically found the 3 bits of
info that I already had.

Her transcription -
"559 7 Frame 2230 OPR
David SL of David McCulloch, wright, Dovecotehall and Sarah Howie born 29th
May registered 19th June 1835"
This was the first mention I had seen of Dovecotehall.

Others were:
"Birth and Baptisms in 1839 572/4 Frame 1060
David McCulloch & Sarah Howie, spouses, Newton Ralston, Cabinet Maker and of
the Established Church had their second child and son born 27th October and
biptised 10th November named John."

"Proclamation of Banns and Marriages in 1834 572/5 Frame 1241
David McCulloch and Sarah Howie both in this Parish were booked for
Proclamation of Banns 15th August and being regularly proclaimed and no
objections offered were married at Neilston 15 September 1834 by Rev. Alex
Fleming."

DAVID MCCULLOCH & family as seen on the 1841 census
Neilston-Renfrewshire - ED #12. Address - Barrhead
MCCULLOCH, David M 25 Cabinet maker Journeyman Born outside Census
County
MCCULLOCH, Mrs. F 25 Ireland
(Sarah Howie)
David M 5
Renfrewshire
John M 1
Renfrewshire
HOWIE, John M 15 PatternDrawerApp Renfrewshire
(Sarah's brother?)

Young David's obituary in the Hamilton Spectator (Ontario) states he was
born in Barrhead and came to Canada in 1842 with his parents.

Any help would be most gratefully accepted

Hi Marg
...and welcome to Talking Scot.
On the assumption it is David McCulloch senior you are hoping to find out more about, it seems there was an 1851 census in Canada (taken in 1850) - might be worth looking there to see if a birthplace is mentioned. Maybe try www.ancestry.com for that? Not sure if they have it...doesn't look like it. Info about Canadian census & links to some data here:
http://allcensusrecords.com/canada/

Also when did registration come in in Canada? Perhaps you could track down his death there and that may give some details of his parentage. Again, www.ancestry.com migth be worth a try.

Sorry I can't be of more help - don't know about Canadian records.
Best wishes
Lesley
