Missing Glass's.....

Post by JohnGlass » Sun Feb 05, 2006 8:53 am

Have come across Four male relatives who appear to have vanished,or have all perhaps gone o'seas. My search of IGI and SP found no results.
The info to date as follows---
Malcolm Glass married Ann Latta 21/6/1838 and had four sons
William 6/6/1839
James 10/4/1841
Malcolm 11/3/1843
Duncan 14/11/1846
All the sons were born Barony,Lanark
Two do appear on a 1841 Census in Clyde St,Anderston, but that is the only
info I have been able to find.
Any suggestions would be appreciated
John

Hi John,

According to the online IGI, the youngest son was christened in Dumbarton. I don't know if that changes your searching for this family.
  • WILLIAM GLASS - Birth: 06 JUL 1839 Barony, Lanark
JAMES GLASS - Birth: 10 APR 1841 Barony, Lanark
MALCOLM GLASS - Birth: 04 MAR 1843 Barony, Lanark
DUNCAN GLASS - Birth 14 NOV 1846, Christening: 22 DEC 1846 Dumbarton, Dunbarton
All the best,

John,

Glass & Latta are very much Dumbarton names. I was an apprentice with William (Billy) Glass from Dumbarton who was a piper. The Latta's, had I believe, a local business as Tanners in the town, and one member was in the local council. I live in Latta Street named after him in the late 1800s.

In the 1881 census there is a William Glass

Dwelling: 105 Stirling St
Census Place: Barony, Lanark, Scotland

Catherine GLASS W 38 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Mary GLASS U 16 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Occ: Domestic Servant
Catherine GLASS 14 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Domestic Servant
William GLASS U 47 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Br In Law
Occ: Labourer

Could this be William with one of his brother's widow.

There are also a couple of James within the right age range and birth place but no sign of Malcolm or Duncan.
Burns, Quinn - Glasgow, N.Ireland
McLeod, Mackay, Nicholson, McNeil - Skye
James, McLeod, Sinclair, Smith - Renton
Davidson, Adie, Gibb - Aberdeen
Jolly, Wishart - Angus
Usher - Newcastle
Mullen, Roe - Dublin
O'Donnell - Ireland, Alexandria

The girls above seem to be the children of William Glass and Catherine Hunter. :?

From the IGI -

Father: William Glass, Mother: Catherine Hunter

1. MARY GLASS
Gender: Female Birth: 15 JUL 1865 Springburn, Lanark, Scotland

2. CATHERINE GLASS
Gender: Female Birth: 20 MAY 1867 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

The other thing to consider is that both Malcolm and Duncan died before 1855. The 1851 census should help.

Annette M

Hi folks,
This from the index - no more details, so don't know if this Anne is a widow or not.
Can't see any of the other children in the area.

Ann Glass Latta

Hello John,

Have you looked at Ann's death entry in 1893 to see who registered it?

Thanks Andrew, you are correct Duncan was born in Dumbarton, temporary brain fade on my part.
Drew--Dumbarton was certainly a key Town.I wish my line was as easy to trace as the Latta's as I have found a lot on them.Ann's Father William was a Shipwright and Malcolms father Finlay was a Ships Journeyman,so probably how they met.
Annette--Ann Latta re-married in 1855 to Alexander Hepburn in Dumbarton.
I assume on Malcolms death,which I also can't find.
The witness on the certificate is son Robert Hepburn B 18/10/1856 in Ardrossan,Ayr. Ann died in Dalmuir,Parish of Old Kilpatrick
Jack--They are possibles.Noted you are from Paisley, have a few who are from there also.

Thanks
John

Hi there,

Just found this in the wills at Scotland's People, and remembered you were looking for the name Glass:

Easton Margaret Date: 13/11/1888 or Maggie Glass, Saleswoman, 279 New City Road, Glasgow, d. 23/08/1888 at Glasgow, intestate Glasgow Sheriff Court Inventories SC36/48/123

Thanks Nina but not one of mine that I have in my Tree to date.
There are about 10 Pages for Glass in the wills section and I have three which are in the line, Archibald/John/Duncan all who were involved in the Aerated Water/Spirt manufacturing Industry.
