Hi Katie this is where it gets frustrating. There are a few possible Thomas Cockburns on the IGI but you want to know which if any are the positively sure set.not possible unless there are clues.
Are any born in same Parish as he was Married/Died in? What was his occupation-would it have made it more likely that he moved around a lot or stayed put.
What about naming patterns what are his childrens names? Any match possible parents on the IGI?
Sometimes somebody else comes up with the info.& will share with you & this has helped me on more than a few occasions.Other times you just don't know which sends me :x but what can you do?

Hi Katie
If you can see the 1851 census, this might help. It is not online at Scotlands People yet, but will be soon. The 1851 should give you his place of birth and his age which should, in turn, help you find the most likley Thomas Cockburn in the available births.
If you know what Parish he was likely to be in at the time of the 1851 (the birthplaces of Jane and Margaret might hep you with this if they were born around that time) you could order the census film from your local LDS family history centre for a small fee.

Best wishes
Lesley
