The Boyds of Kilmarnock

Post by trish1 » Wed Feb 08, 2006 3:34 am

I have a copy of a copy of a family document on the above & I wonder if there is any point in attempting to find any relationship between the families described and my Boyds.

The document looks rather like one received by a cousin of my father's for which he paid a small fortune to an Irish researcher - on a completely different family - but it was somewhat useless for family history.

I googled the "Boyds of Kilmarnock" and there were many articles with similar information as in my document - but I noted that there were two sites describing the "Current Lord Boyd" - one said he lived in Spain, another said the title was for sale
so my thoughts are it is a rather pointless exercise to follow it further.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Hi Trish
Without much to go on it sounds a bit like it could turn into a lengthy "wild goose chase", If it were me, I think I'd file it away somewhere, keeping it in mind, then if anything turned up which made me think there was a firm connection I'd research it further.

I had a similar experience with an old document, a marriage contract dating from 1771, in an archives - I found a reference to it, went to see it at the archives but at the time, although I had a strong hunch it was referring to one of my lot, I didn't expend any energy on transcribing it. Partly this was because it seemed a bit of a waste of time if they weren't my lot and also in a strange way I didn't want to get too involved in"their world" if they turned out not to be related. However, a document I found over a year later from 1792 confirmed without a shadow of a doubt that they were "mine" so I'm now slogging away on transcribing the document.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Lesley

Many thanks for your reply - which is close to my own thoughts. It contains some interesting historical discussions related to items such as the life of Mary Q of Scots and the 1749 war, so perhaps I should file it for the historical content.

I have my Boyds back to 1800, so only another 151 to join up with 1749 - the end of the document :D
