HOW CAN I TELL IF THEY ARE THOMAS COCKBURN PARENTS, I HAVE FOUND A BIRTH FOR A THOMAS COCKBURN FOR 28/8/1799 THE PARENTS ARE LISTED AS JAMES COCKBURN AND HELEN ANDERSON . I FOUND A DEATH FOR THOMAS WIFE ELSPETH KAY SO I USED THE DATE TO TRY AND FIND THOMAS. THE BIRTH WAS REGISTERED AT SAINT CUTHBERT EDINBURGH. THANKS KATIE

May I rephrase your question just to make sure I got it right.
"How do I know if the Thomas Cockburn b.1799 to parents James Cockburn and Helen Anderson is my Thomas Cockburn?"

What information do you already have for your Thomas Cockburn? Is he the one that married Elspeth Kay? If so what was their marriage date and her death date.

Don't promise anything but a wee bit more information might help us to help you in your search.

hi, catriona, cant get any further with my tree as i cant find out who thomas parents were. what i have is, he married elspeth kay on the 2nd of april 1820 in ratho edinburgh, he had 8 kids on the 1851 census he down as a gardner but the 1841 says he is a agricultural labourer. he was born in berwickshire preston scotland, he died in largo fife but cant get a cert for it, he did leave a will which you can see on sp. thats all i have cant find much on him or his family for some reason. thanks katie

You say that Thomas was born in Preston Berwickshire... did this come from the 1851 census?
There is an IGI submission (not an extract from the records)

Christening: 30 JUN 1794 Duns, Berwick, Scotland

parents
Father: JAMES COCKBURN
Mother: MARGT. SMITH

Duns is only a couple of miles away from Preston.

Hi Jim, i found another two myself their names are alexander cockburn and helen platt, and archibald cockburn and janet maclain, i just cant prove if they are mine. they seem to use the same names etc my mum dad dad was called thomas cockburn he married lydia frier his dad was called alexander cockburn he married isabella hogg, his dad was called thomas cockburn he married elspeth kay. other male names they used were john, david, joseph and james. so it could be the one you found james cockburn and margaret smith or alexander cockburn and helen platt. thanks again katie
