Grizel Robertson, James Johnston.....

Post by Alice Bradford » Tue Feb 14, 2006 4:23 am

Hi,

Lesley told me to try to find my Grizel Robertson's parents by using the naming pattern and I really appreciated that suggestion. I'm wondering what to do now because she had 7 daughters and no sons. Her husbands mothers name was Agnes and that is the name of Grizel's first daughter. Her second daughter is named Margaret and I did find a Grizel born to a Margaret. What should I do next other than ring my hands and shake my head?

I have a similar problem with James Johnstons. According to the IGI my James Johnston was born about 1779, New Monkland, Lanark and married Elizabeth Rewcastle 3 Jan 1801. The OPR has 3 James Johnstons born 1779, 2 at Old Monkland and one at Biggar. The one born at Biggar has a mother Margaret Moncrief, but the other 2 do not list a mother. How am I supposed to know who James parents are?
Thanks,
Alice

Hi Alice,
This may not be of any help at all but the Grizel in my tree is also called Grace. However,if that had been one of the children's names you will already have tried it.
Looking up births in the 1700's is so frustrating if the names are quite common as so many do just have the father's name.
Good luck,
Rae
Names of interest: Perthshire- Taylor, McDonald, McRaw, Gould; Caithness- Cormack, Campbell, Sutherland; Berwickshire- Darling, Johnson, Whitlie, Forrest/Forrester/Foster, Barns/Barnes,Buglass/Bookless; Wilson, Thorburn, Cowe, Laing, Rae, Colven, Collin,

Hi Alice
Her husbands mothers name was Agnes and that is the name of Grizel's first daughter.
It is possible that Agnes was also the name of Grizel's mother! I have a case in my tree like that - first daughter named after both mothers in one fell swoop! ...oddly, that was an Agnes too.. :?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Alice

In my 17/1800 Scottish families I have found the names of brothers/sisters have been used for children once past the grandparents and parents. Often the children were also given the surname of a sibling for a second name.

If you look at the Grizal born to Margaret, see if you can find the siblings of this Grizal (hopefully girls :D ), and check if the names reappear in Grizal's daughters. You could try a similar check if you can find a Grizal born to Agnes, in the right area.

I have been lucky in confirming some parents via the wills I have found on SP. If I think I have a parent name I search the wills looking for the right name in the right place at approx the right time.

Good luck with the search

Trish

I need to look at the IGI or OPR to try to figure out who could possibly be my Grizel Robertson's parents, but I tried to look at wills on SP and it asked for occupation. I have no idea what to put down. Can you help me on that?
I sure appreciate your suggestions. Alice

Hi Alice

I've never put anything in that field - I just put down my name and the area (if I have an idea of the latter) - so I'm not much help with occupation - I don't think you have to use that. Just use the name & see how many come up. It is free to see the will indexes.
