Nicolsons in Fife from mid 1700s.....

Post by Liz Turner » Fri Feb 17, 2006 1:24 am

This is my second visit to this site and having looked at a lot of the posts, I have to say it's great! The replies to queries seem very helpful! I don't have an acutal query myself at the moment but just wanted to say hi!

I've been searching for a number of years now and my interests are particularly centred around Fife, Edinburgh, and Banchory-Devenick (although lately my searches have taken me into the central lowlands).

I plan to return often now that I've found you!

Thanks for the reply - my Ross people originated from Perthshire and Cupar Angus, Fife and latterly moved/retired to Edinburgh. I come from the family of George Ross and Jane Gray, he came from Forres and she came from Forfar. My Nicolsons in Edinburgh are too many to list here but they came originally from Pittenweem in Fife. The Edinburgh ones include William N=Anne Walker; and Helen N=Alexander N=Jenny Blaikie.

I don't think at first glance that we are connected, but Nicolson is not that common a name. Did your ones originate in Edinburgh or elsewhere?

All the best - Liz

Good Morning Liz

As yet I haven't got passed Alexander Nicolson & Margaret Orrock who married in Edinburgh in 1867.
My Ross's according to some census info come from Tain in Rosshire but that is suspect as on others we have Edinburgh as their birth place.
Good luck with your research

Which means that you have the names of the parents.

If not shown as deceased in 1867, then there must be death certificate for the parents somewhere, hopefully in Scotland, showing their parents' names, with an outside chance of a similar route to those parents' names in turn.

If shown as deceased, then cross your fingers that they survived until 1855.

Thanks for that David.
I have been so bogged down with my Ross's & McLarens that I had been leaving that side alone, maybe its time I took a look down that route and had a good look at what I have and see if I can find anything on them. My uncle ( a married in one) thinks he has a link to them too and has been badgering me to go further with this pair. At least it will give me something new to get my teeth into as the other lot are getting very annoying!

Bertha

I know my original post was about Nicolsons, but I'm happy to be side-tracked on to Rosses! I say this because I actually have what I believe to be two different lines of ROSS in my family.

The first I have already mentioned originate from Betsy Falconer=Donald Ross on 10/6/1826 in Forres. This group descend to my grandfather George Alexander Ross b 20/4/1905. There are unknown descendants in this group because I've never really pursued them - I may well do that now!

My second lot of ROSS come from Ann Angus=James Ross on 23/10/1826 in St Cuthberts, Edinburgh. This lot are not actually "blood" relatives as they descend to my step great grandmother not my great grandmother!

Maybe if we find out more we should start a Ross post!
