Halliday's in Kirkcudbright.....

Post by janehalliday » Mon Mar 06, 2006 12:50 pm

Hi All
I am researching Halliday's in the Kirkcudbright and surrounding areas.
I start from Robert Halliday born in the Troqueer area around 1811, he married Mary Smith from Kirkgunzeon.
I am having trouble finding his death certificate, I know he was alive in 1841 by the censes information, he was deceased in 1851 as the censes states that Mary was a widow living in 25 Market St Maxwelltown ( with children )
I have searched Scotlands People for his death but came up with nothing, I do not know where they where prior to Mary residing in Maxwelltown.
He was a farm servant or farm labourer during his working life as per census info.
I also can not find their marriage or the death of Mary.
I would very much appreciate any help in the area.
My GG Grandfather William Halliday was born 11th Feb 1833 in Urr, Kirkcudbright, I can not find his birth either, I have this info from other sources. I have info on other siblings.
I have census information for 1841 and 1851.
William Halliday emigrated to Victoria Australia as a gold miner married Margaret Shepherd ( From Dundee) at Linton Diggings, had 2 children one being John Halliday my G Grandfather ( they had many more in NZ ) and the went to New Zealand
Christchurch to be with his brother John Sprot Halliday and sister in-law Henrietta nee Dickie. John Sprot Halliday was a farmer and land owner in Leeston Christchurch.
John Halliday returned to Victoria with his family, that is how I am here.

Any help would be very appreciated and if I can help anyone I would be more than happy to do so, so many people have been so helpful over the years I would love to give back.

G Day from Oz

H Jane
..and a warm welcome to Talking Scot. :D
I know he was alive in 1841 by the censes information, he was deceased in 1851

Because Robert died before Statutory Registration ws introduced in 1855, his death will not be on Scotlands People. You would need to find out if any deaths were recorded in the Old Parish Registers for the area you last know them to have been living in - maybe indicated in the 1841 census? Some OPRs include deaths or mortcloth hire information, but some OPRs do not - its a bit of a matter of good luck, if they died in an obliging parish!

best wishes
Lesley

GDay to you too from freeezing Middlesex.
I don't know if you are aware that Stat Reg dids not come into affect in Scotland until 1855. Before that most BMD are recorded on Old Parish Records or OPR's for short. What is found in them is variable from area to area.u may find excellent info for Births where name of parents, birthplace within Parish & even the time of birth to-born today a lawful son to....Some Parishes kept little, variable records of events. Some have not survived.
You can view the images at NRH in Edinburgh if they are recorded. You can also view them at a LDS Family History Centre where for a small sum they will order in any films they don't have for you to view.
Alternatively you can purchase the image from SP(Scotlands People) but you may get only what I have explained above.
If Mary lived until 1855 then you should againfor a small fee be able to view the image of her Death Certificate & if she died in that magical year of 1855 there is usually lots more genealogical info avaiable on it that is not there in later certificates. At the least it should have place of death, marital status who she was married to/widow of,cause of death, name of parents & who informant of death was.
If this is confusing or you need more help then get typing we are happy to help.
Snap Lesley you must be a faster typist than I!

Hi Lesley.
Many thanks for the welcome and the reply. I will give your sugesstion a try, I think I will have another look in scotlands people, I reckon I just about own half that site
I was also told of the Cholera out break in the area, which is around the time of his death, if i could find info on this it may give me an answer. I have look at some sites in the past, any ideas
As for Mary Halliday she should be a registered Death.
I have been doing family research for many years and quite use to ](*,) .
But I never give up.
Many thanks

Hi Jane
if you go to:
http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/h ... r-cov.html
you can check what OPR records exist for the area you are interested in.
Scotlands People does not have the OPR deaths.
You could then maybe order the film you are interested in from your local LDS centre.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Joette
Thanks to you too. :D As i mentioned to Lesley I have tried many ways.
Quite often dates and spellings can make searching hard. My knowledge of the area, parishes are limited, maps help and changing of borders eg, Dumfriess etc make it hard for poor me.
I was in Scotland last September and did some research, but honestly Scotland's People is easier, so it looks like I will make them richer.
Thanks for your help
G Day from a nice and warm OZ around 28C today.

Hi Jane
As you probably know by now there will be no DC on Scotlandspeople before 1855... :(
I have had a look for Halliday on
http://www.old-kirkcudbright.net/geneal ... 843-44.asp

I can only find a Mrs Halliday aged 62 who died in 1843

Jim

edited - there is also an Alexander Haliday aged 71 died in 1846

G Day Jim
Thanks for you reply.
I have been to Old Kirkcudbright site and had contact with a very helpful Jim Bell, that was a few years back. He told me that the houses in market
mawxwelltown were demolished, as for graves there may not be a headstone.
I have seen some records in Scotlands people , but unfortunatley no images are available, once again ](*,)
I will look at the other sites mentioned.
Thanks for you help.

Hi Jane
You may have checked on this site already:
CHURCHES and GRAVEYARDS in Dumfries and Galloway
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~dfsgal/

There are also quite a lot of published Monumental Inscriptions for the area for sale at the Scottish Genealogy Society:
http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/acatalog/ ... re_MI.html

And the local FHS might be able to help:

Best wishes
