Persona Non Grata! Josiah/James Gilray.....

Post by Oran » Wed Mar 08, 2006 11:42 am

After Tracey from TalkingScot kindly posted the Gilray find on NAS.
We were very pleased, also with the response, and managed to download a service record of Josiah/James Gilray, but we are still left asking ourselves lots of questions.

why was Josiah 1880 was found in the Greenock Industrial School in 1891 in the first place, Josiah's mother had died 1883 but he was not a complete orphan, his father was still alive.

James/Josiah was dismissed 31st March 1903 three months before his father, James died on 29th July 1903.
There appears to be no record of any life event after his dismissal.

A marriage search on ScotlandsPeople, produced a list of five marriages, one was his father, James Gilray to Elizabeth Phillips,
one was the second marriage of above James Gilray to Isobella Wood in 1887 the other three did not match.

To conclude, we wonder what happened to Josiah/James after 1903
as there appears to be be no marriage, death entry, or any life event after 1903 in Greenock? any suggestions how to proceed next.

Maybe he did emmigrate as we first thought, how would I start a migration search, its a long shot,
but maybe some-one might come across the name Josiah/James Gilray after 1903.

Hi, Oran

Ancestry has a Josiah Gilray in World War 1 draft, US army Enlistment, Social Security Death Index and only one. The 1930 Federal Census and the Oregan Death Index have two in each. Two or three James Gilrays are also scattered around. Perhaps one of our members from the States will be able to find you more information.

The Canada 1911 Census, which is online has one James Gilray.

So perhaps emigration is the way to go.

Best wishes
Catriona

Hello CatrionaL,

Thank-you for your reply, and the Gilrays you have listed on Ancestry.

It seems I am still a member of Ancestry, but need a further subscription to view any of the records for USA on Ancestry.

Hello Oran

Does anywhere hold records for the industrial school i wonder ?
I hope i have the right place and there is only one Greenock (appologies if not) but it may be worth mailing these to see if they hold any records that might give you more clues.

All the Greenock industrial school records (and poor relief) for Greenock were destroyed during the Blitz.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.
