McNie Family.....

Post by vik300 » Sun Mar 12, 2006 11:31 am

A big hello to you all.

I am researching my sisters' Scottish roots and not doing to badly for a beginner - although I am having trouble deciphering some of the writing on the documents!!!! I am enjoying all this research, not just my sisters' but my own too- its rather addictive and to top it all what a friendly, helpful, nice bunch of people around these forums too :D

My sisters lineage is MCNIE, (She also knows that there is a MC Gregor clan tartan within the lineage) I have detailed what I have unearthed already :

Her father: Robert Donaldson McNie married to (our mum) HSM Herpe. Robert D born 1928 Auchenheath area, died approx 1968 Oxted Surrey.

His siblings are Ellen and Shelia.
Their parents: Robert Donaldson McNie born 22/11/1908 married - 23/5/1925 to Emma (Forrest) Hanney born 1906. This is where I encounter my first problem - is Forrest, Emmas' middle name of a double-barrelled surname? Emma parents are John and Helen ?Forrest? John was a coalminer.

Robert Donaldson father was Robert Donaldson 19/11/1870 married 1894 to Esther Davidson born 9/8/1870. RD born Tullianllian Perth and Ester Avoch,Ross and Cromarty. I don't have any siblings for any of these people - as yet.

RD parents were James and Jemima Clarrk married 1861.
James was a river pilot, and they were married in Tullianllian Perth., I have Kincardine as the places of birth. By the 1891 census Jemima was a widow.

Several of the Robert Donaldsons' worked on the railways in various capacities - is it possible to search the personnel records?

Esther parents were John and Jane Urquhart.

And this is as far as I've managed, before I start going too much further I would like to uncover, siblings, deaths etc.

If anyone can link to these details or provide other sources of information or even offer a bit of help to this beginner it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.
Vicky

The MC quite clearly shows Emma's mom's maiden name as Forrest. Not at all unusual to find a child given the first and last name of an ancestor for their own first and middle name. In other words....Emma Forrest might be a clue as to someone else in Helen's line.

Welcome back Vicky :D

I hope your college courses and work all go well.

We are here any time you need us and, look at it this way, doing a bit of "other stuff" when you aren't studying/working is great for clearing the head. Well, that's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it

Haste Ye Back :D

Hi Vicky

Part of your post asked about personnel records for the Railways.
There were a great many railway companies initially and all sorts of amalgamations and take-overs happened over the years before they were eventually formed into 4 main companies (pre-nationalisation).
To discover if any records still exist you would have to establish which company they actually worked for, then see if any records still exist.
Some company records have disappeared entirely. Others are not detailed down as far as employee records. A few sets of more detailed records have been rescued and archived.
Almost all of the old railway companies have clubs and societies of enthusiasts who have rescued as much of their chosen company history as possible so you may be in luck.
