BOSWELL / GILLIES - How to find & contact living relativ

Post by davidheritage » Sun Mar 12, 2006 12:58 pm

I would like suggestions please on how to find and contact current relatives
of my BOSWELL and GILLIES ancestors.

I live in Australia and am descended from Maggie BOSWELL, born 1871,
Rutherglen. Maggie emigrated to Australia in 1889 at 18 years of age. I
have tried to trace her remaining siblings in Scotland and have found the
following:

Her older sister Annie Hart BOSWELL was born 1863 and died in 1933 at
Victoria Infirmary, Cathcart, Lanark. Annie never married and the informant on her death certificate was her niece, Kate GILLIES.

Kate GILLIES was the daughter of Maggie's younger brother Frederick BOSWELL and his first wife Ann Cameron LIVINGSTONE.

Kate was born, Kate Runciman BOSWELL, 1900 and married Alexander GILLIES in 1926 at Douglas Hotel, Glasgow. I also know that Kate Runciman GILLIES died 27/09/1978 in Glasgow.

Frederick BOSWELL died in 1940 and the informant on his death certificate
was son, George BOSWELL. Frederick was living at 97 Byres Road, Glasgow at the time of his death. I don't have any further info on George as his birth was obviously after the time of the info available on Scotlands People.

Ann Cameron LIVINGSTONE died in 1920 and Frederick then married Annie BIGNELL (nee GREEN) in 1921. Annie died in 1947.

I would like to make contact with any living descendants of Frederick and
Ann.

Can anyone please suggest avenues to discover descendants of Kate GILLIES and GEORGE BOSWELL? I believe there was also at least one other child of Frederick and Ann, I have found a Helen born 1904 but at this point I don't know who she may have married etc.

Any ideas would be most welcome. Living in Australia I am restricted by
distance, but hopefully there are other avenues I can attempt.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi David
...and a warm welcome to Talking Scot. :D

To trace forwards it looks like you may need to find a friend or a researcher who can go to New Register House in Edinburgh for you and follow through from the information you already have. The more recent information is not online as you know.

Also see DavidWW's recent reply to a similiar question to yours:

The only other thing I could think of doing would be send a letter for publication to a local newspaper in the hope that someone recognises the names and contacts you. Maybe not so effective though...

Best wishes
Lesley
Researching:
Midlothian & Fife - Goalen, Lawrie, Ewart, Nimmo, Jamieson, Dick, Ballingall.
Dunbartonshire- Mcnicol, Davy, Guy, McCunn, McKenzie.
Ayrshire- Lyon, Parker, Mitchell, Fraser.
Easter Ross- McCulloch, Smith, Ross, Duff, Rose.

Hi Lesley and Tracey,
Thanks for the welcome Lesley, I will have a look at your suggestions, thank you. I'm just hoping to be able to link into this branch of the family as it seems that Frederick was the only other sibling of Maggie's to raise a family. It would be nice to be able to make contact with that branch of the family and fill in the missing pieces.
Tracey, I have listed on Genes Reunited, so yes, they would be my listings there. I've have reasonable success on Genes with other lines, but nothing at all on my BOSWELL line. I found it interesting also, that almost all of my contacts on Genes have come through me checking the Hotlist and replying to people. Very few people have contacted me first. I wonder how many people use that Hotlist facility? It has given me some fantastic contacts and information.

Thanks
Regards
David
