Help find my Dewar Family.....

Post by Mary-Ann » Mon Mar 13, 2006 2:01 am

Hi

I have just recently found my Scottish family, after looking for several years, and would like to see if anyone can help me further, my 2x great grandmother was Mary Dewar, possibly born in Devon England abt 1824, her death certificate in New Zealand gave her parents as David Dewar and Mary Creasey, residing in Seagate Dundee. However looking at the 1841 census I can only find a John Dewar born 1792 in Foss Perth,[parents unknown] and his wife Mary Ann Christie born abt 1792, unknown where, daughter of David Christie and Mary ??. residing at the Seagate address.

On the 1841 census John and Mary children are Janet b 1821, James b 1821, David b 1826, John b 1831, Jane b 1831, Sophia b 1832, Robert 1836 and Thomas b 1839.

I have not been able to find any marriages for John Dewar and Mary Ann Christie, nor for David Christie and his wife Mary. Nor have I been able to find a David Dewar and Mary Creasey. None of the family appear on the IGI so am really at a loss of what to do from here.

Apparently John Dewar died in 1849 age 57yrs, and I haven't been able to find the family since then. Can anyone help find this family or do you think you may have a connection.

Mary-Ann

Hi Mary-Ann & Welcome to TalkingScot.
As you may or may not know Stat.Reg did not begin in Scotland until 1855 for such early data you are into the realms of Old Parish/Parochial Records. The index for such is avaiable online at Scotlands People but unfortunately the images are not.For those you have to view in person at NRH in Edinburgh or view the films at your nearest LDS Family History Centre. You can purchase the images on order from NRH too but what
information is avaiable varies from Parish to Parish from very clear informative recordings to zilch. The usual info would be the name of the couple(on a marriage)& perhaps the name of parents but usually only the Father is named.
There are many knowledgable people here who I am sure will help as much as possible.Sorry that doesn't include me on this one!

Hi Mary-Ann
There are quite a few Dewars in the Howff burial ground - this is an old cemetery in central Dundee. No guarantee that any are yours, but maybe worth a look:

Seagate is a very old street in Dundee (still there, but no evidence of any very old buildings there now - just oldish whisky bond warehouses - empty or converted into flats and some shops) so there were probably many people living at a Seagate address in 1841.
Best wishes

Thank you both for your replies and welcome to this site. Have already looked at the Howff burials and found a couple of sons of John Dewar.

Thanks

Hello Mary Ann

Another point to consider is that in the 1700's there were splits in the Church and various secceding churches were formed - They did not always submit their records so they may not appear on the OPR.
Some sects/branches were United Free Church of Scotland, Congregationalists, Episcopalians.
The history of all this is a fascinating topic but it does make life difficult for us descendants.
