Hi
I'm new to this forum. I start my first message with this question. Sources of my information include SRs, OPRs, apprentice records.
What I know about William Ballantyne/Ballantine:
- Shoemaker in Pleasance in the parish of St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh. Died after 1786. - Spouse 6-12-1771 in St. Cuthbert's Isabel Watt, daughter of James Watt. Her brother seems to be Archibald Watt, taylor in St. Mary's Wynd (Edinburgh) – witness on christenings of Isabel's children.
They had children (born in St. Cuthbert's): Archibald Ballantine, born 3-1-1773; Ann Ballantine, born 5-9-1775; James Ballantine, b. 30-8-1781.
The son Archibald:
- Apprentice to Andrew Bell, barber in Edinburgh, for six years (1786); Barber in Bo'ness (1795-). Died 7-11-1817 "aged 45 years" in Bo'ness. - Spouse 15-1-1795 (”irregularily married”, confirmed by the session 19-10-1795) in Bo'ness Janet Turnbull, born about 1758 (?), died 15-1-1823 ”Jean Ballantyne aged 65 years” - perhaps the same person.
Children (born in Bo'ness):
William O'Connoher Ballantine, born 1-11-1795.
Margaret Ballantine, born 17-6-1797; died 1879 in Bo'ness. - Spouse 15-3-1822 in South Leith seaman Thomas Henderson. They lived in Bo'ness.
David Ballantine, born 20-12-1801; ironfounder; d. 1-12-1872.
? Anne Ballantine, born about 1806, died 22-4-1822 in Bo'ness.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does anyone know something about the Ballantines, the Watts or the Turnbulls? I haven't been able to find anything certain on them. Why did Archibald Ballantine and Janet Turnbull marry "irregularily"?

For info - there still is a Foundry in Bo'ness which was originally owned by a Ballantine family - I think it is now know as Bo'ness Iron Company - they make manhole covers and drain covers. The Foundry is in the Grangepans area of the town.
This link has details of the Company history:-

Hope this helps

I know much about the Ballantines from the 19th century to 20th century, or knew!
Success!
I looked at the OPR entry for the birth of son James 1781. The witnesses were Daniel & John Dewar, musicians in Edinburgh.
I located the marriage of "Daniel Denvar", musician in Old Kirk parish, on 28th March 1778 in Edinburgh to Katherine Ballantine, daughter of deceased John Ballantyne, mason in Dunkeld!!!
IGI search for John's children reveals that he had a son named William, a daughter named Katherine as well as a son named Archibald!
My first connection to the North!
