Introducing myself - Hunting for Hamiltons.....
Hello, I live in Australia, my great grandfather was born in Johnstone, Renfrew, Scotland. His name was Thomas Hamilton 7 april 1865. He married Catherine Cocking. Thomas was an electrical engineer and I believe he died in Canada between 1910 and 1920. His mother was Mary Anne Leitch (Ireland) and his father Thomas Hamilton c. 1840 also Johnstone, Renfrew.

Hi Judy & Welcome aboard the good ship Talking Scot. You are jammy too boasting about the beautiful Australian sunshine as we here in the Northern Hemisphere shiver. We will still help you though. Is it living relatives you are seeking or further back on the Hamiltons or both?
I would start with what you know about your Great-Grandfather.If he was born in 1865 he would be hopefully around for the 1871 Census & as he was 5/6 should be at home with his family.the Census should list the members of the Household/Age/Relationship to head(1841 excepting.)/place of Birth & any occupation.
This will help you to place the family & help you establish who is who.
You can for a small fee search on Scotlands People & there you will find BMD from 1855,Old Parish Registers(Index only you have to order image.) & the 1851-1901 Census. There is also a section to search for free for Wills,Testaments which can be downloaded for a small sum.
Also Freecen has some areas for the 1841-1891 it depends where you are looking.
There are lots of helpful people here & if you need any help just ask no matter how small or how stupid it sounds.
Try posting on the Canada forum for help with his death there.
