Hi Agnes
Hav a look at http://www.scottishathletics.org.uk/ and see where that leads you.
Could also be worth seeing what athletics/running/"harriers" clubs there were in and around Paisley.

Hi Agnes,
did you ever find out anything?
My great grandfather James McKenna was a runner. I was told this by my dad who had no other information. My McKennas are a bit of a mystery still.

Hi Chris
My grandmother was a McKenna and she had eight siblings. Her parents were John McKenna and Catherine Ward and they were maried in Glasgow July 1875. John was from Co. Monaghan and Catherine was from Donegal. If any of this sounds familiar let me know, I have quite a bit of information on them.
Regards
Cathie

Ahh, so near and yet so far!
I don't think there is a connection at this level. I have a James McKenna (born Ireland 1841) who moved from Belfast to Glasgow with his wife Catherine McKenna nee McKenna (eek) (Born Ireland, Tyrone, 1839.)
James was a hairdresser and brought his family to live in Well Street, Anderston. They had the following children that I know of:
John McKenna (Belfast 1861)
Joseph McKenna (Belfast 1863)
James McKenna (Belfast 1867) My GGGrandfather
Bernard McKenna (Belfast 1873)
Agatha McKenna (Belfast 1874)
Laura McKenna (Anderston 1881)
The seemed to be mostly in Anderston, Partick, and Govan.
Both the parents ended up in the Govan poorhouse - I have fantastic records from the Mitchell about them, absolutely fascinating.
John McKenna I know very little about. I believe he was married, but I don't know who to.
Joseph McKenna was in the barber business, married a Catherine McKenna (eek again) and lived in the Townhead area.
Bernard ended up in Dykebar Asylum. He died in Barnhill Poorhouse in 1927
Agatha McKenna married a George Redmond (another hairdresser) and had a lot of kids.
My ancestor James McKenna was a Riveter in the shipyards, rumoured to be a runner by my dad, and married Margaret Connelly. My dad knows nothing about his family and there are no old folks left to ask. I'd love to find some other McKennas from Glasgow so I can shed light on this interesting bunch!
I have spent way too much money at Scotlands People - so I have a bunch of spare certificates and searches. I'll have a look through them for any McKennas that might be yours!
All the best
