Robert KNOX - Renfrew.....

I am looking for Robert, father of John KNOX (b1796). Robert married Jean MCINDOE in 1783 in Renfrew. Jean was b 1765. I am really a bit flummoxed. There is a Robert b 10 Aug 1761 in Glasgow (644/01 0013) to James K/Margaret McGILL. There is also a Robert b 3 Feb 1754 in Renfrew (575/00 0002) to Robert K/Elisabeth MCKINLAY.

The names of John/Jean's children were:

Robert, Agnes, Jean, Hugh, Robert, Martin*, John, Adam, Martin*

From this, I assume that John's parents were Robert and Agnes as Jean's parents were Hugh and Jean.

I searched scotlandspeople from 1 Jan 1746 to 31 Dec 1764, but there is no Robert born to Robert/Agnes.

Can anyone help, please?

The names of John/Jean's children were:
Robert, Agnes, Jean, Hugh, Robert, Martin*, John, Adam, Martin*
From this, I assume that John's parents were Robert and Agnes as Jean's parents were Hugh and Jean.

- If they followed the Scottish naming pattern strictly and the children's names you have given are in order of eldest to youngest then John's parents are likely to have been Robert and Jean. Jean's parents were likely to have been Hugh and Agnes.

It is not a hard and fast rule, and depends on having knowledge of the "full set" of children - not always easy to know if you have or haven't achieved this, as apart from the ones you may not know about, children may have died and left gaps, then the same name may be used again later....

Thanks, that's helpful, but there are still no Roberts born to Robert/Jean!! There are some Robert/Janets. That also puts doubt on whether I have the right Jean McIndoe, as the one I found's parents were Hugh and Jean. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Do the naming patterns continue with the next few children - ie are they named after gtgrandparents? John K (Robert's son) had a daughter Agnes.
