Hullo,
I found my Margaret Ferguson tonight on the 1851 Scotland Census & she is married to Mathew Cargin.
Margaret's place of birth is listed as Argyle, Islay. Her age is 58.
I make her date of birth to be about 1793.
Can anyone give me advice on how to find her birth & hopefully her parents?
Any suggestions would be very gratefully received.
Kind regards,
Pat Bostock.

Hi Pat,
Welcome to TalkingScot.
On checking the online IGI at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... _form=true and searching for Margaret Ferguson, born in Argyll(shire) 1793 ± 5 years gives 25 results. On removing all of the mainland Scotland results, you are left with two in Kildalton parish, which is on Islay. The two results are for the same record - Margaret Ferguson, born 18-Oct-1789. Her father is listed as Donald Ferguson (mother not listed - that's not uncommon). This could be your Margaret, but with only a father's name to go by, that will be difficult to prove. Unless of course you already have her father's name and it is not Donald, hence you could discount this record, and you are no further forward
.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

Hi Pat,
You may already know of Steve Gilchrist's & Ted Larson's pages?
They are excellent for anyone with Islay ancestors.

ps, and you've probably got the family in the 1841 census from FreeCEN.
It would be useful to find the family in 1861,
then you'd know that Matthew and Margaret's DCs (if they died in Scotland) should be available on ScotlandsPeople.
(hopefully with their parents known)

pps, this 1855 MC could be worth checking to see if Thomas' parents are still as living (i do hope so!).
He was born in Paisley, and is aged 27 in the 1861 Glasgow census with wife Elizabeth 25, and daur Martha M. 4yrs.
THOMAS CARGIN
ELIZTH. THOMSON
Marriage: 31 DEC 1855 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
[it may be registered in 1856 though....]
