confused?.....
I have already had a lot of help from you all, but now I'm confused. On the 1861 census Bathgate, I have a Jessie Donaldson age 9yrs, parents are Robert D, and Margaret ( Heugh) can't find a birth for Jessie apart from one on Scotish origins, for 1852, but that is a marriage and doesn't give parents names. I do have a birth for a Janet D 1851, with correct parents, is it possible that Jessie and Janet are the same person, as Janet is not on 1861 census.?

If its any help I have several Janets who turn up as a Jessie. Seems to be quite usual.

Hi
I ended up with a death record page with three Jessies and a Janet on the same page. Both Jessies were baptised as Janet and, unbelievably two of them were mine!!!
Often a Jane becomes Jean but can be found as Janet too.
They did this just to keep us on our toes a hundred years later

The alternative names had a practical reason as well (and still do in my mother's family). When a family name is passed down you may have a mother Jane, a daughter Jane, HER daughter Jane, her sister's daughter Jane....well you get the idea.
To save confusion amongst family members the names for each Jane were altered to include Jane, Jean, Jeannie, Janet, Jessie, Janette, and probably more for today, Jan. My Gran was a Jane, and she was always known as Nettie!
My mother is a Margaret from a long line of Margarets. But there is Peggy, Rita, Margaret, Maggie, etc...
