Looking for my G Grandparents.....
My G Grandparents were MURDOCH McKENZIE and AGNES BALLANTYNE. Both were born in Glasgow c1855 ish. They had 2 children ALEXANDER born c 1875 and ANN born c 1879. Someone did a look up for me and found a possible match on the 1881 census in Barony, Lanarkshire - mother and 2 children but no father. I know that Agnes emigrated shortly after this and left her children with a relative in Liverpool. Did Murdoch die? Can anyone find out anything about these people ie births or the marriage. I think Agnes also had a brother called Murdoch who was a Master Mariner.
I'd be really grateful for ant help!

Hi Trishtrash
This looks like what you have described for the 1881:
He may have been away working on the census night, and there may be some other reason they did not leave UK together.
If you get stuck, give us a shout!
Best wishes

Ballantyne
Hi,
The igi lists a Murdoch McKenzie Ballantyne born in Anderston, Glasgow in 1862 to George Ballantyne and Catherine McKenzie. They also had a daughter Agnes born Calton, Glasgow in 1856. This could very possibly be your Agnes as the age and place of birth is about right . Other children were Jessie (1859 Calton) John (1860 Bridgeton) and James Wood (1864 Anderston). George and Catherine married in Glasgow in 1851.
Regards,
Isobel (Edinburgh)

Thanks everyone. I have found a marriage between Agnes and Murdoch, both living at the same address in Scott St. Agnes' mother appears to have been a McKenzie but whether it is the same family or like my Jones rellies in Wales - 2 Jones families joined - I don't know!!
Could someone try to find birth records for Murdoch McKenzie please. The marriage info says he was 23 in 1875 but I haven't got it with me to check his parents names.

Hi Trishtrash
A quick search on the IGI reveals 19 Murdo, Murdock & Murdoch Mckenzies, Birth/Christening, 1850 - 1854, Scotland. So without knowing his parents names its a bit of a lottery! I'd suggest you use the IGI first to find your man, ( www.familysearch.org ) then go to Scotlands People to locate his birth entry. This should save you a bit of money.
There is one in Paisley in 1850 in the IGI, but may or may not be you man....his parents names look likely. However, it is a submission, so may not be accurate. And as it comes before 1855 you will not find his birth detials on Scotlands People as, if it exists it will be in an Old Parish Register (OPR). Check out http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4148 for more details about the IGI and OPRs in general.
Best wishes

Thanks Lesley. I will rifle through my pieces of paper when I get home tonight and see if I can locate his parent details. Trouble is the stack of papers and possible links is getting huge. I don't want to enter things on my tree till I can confim an ancestor!!

ballantyne
Hi Lesley,
The father of the Agnes I found was George Ballantyne and mother was Catherine McKenzie, and there was a sibling called Murdoch McKenzie Ballantyne. This seemed to fit the info that Trish had, in that her Agnes was born around 1855/ 57 in Glasgow and had a brother called Murdoch.
Does seem like a coincidence in the names and worth checking further for links between husband Murdoch McKenzie and mother Catherine McKenzie.
