Is there anyone who has knowlege of the above family.
I have got back to 1802 with John McLean and Mary McVicar but I am stuck there.
The Fairbairns in 1840 were all from Cadder Lanarkshire
(Thos Fairbairn m Marion McLean 1840) but where he came from is a mystery.
Anyone any info?
Jean Donald.

This looks like Thomas and Marion in 1841, from FREECEN.
Piece: SCT1841/644 Place: Glasgow-Lanarkshire Enumeration District: 20
Civil Parish: Glasgow Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: St George
Folio: 243 Page: 13
Address: Dobbies Loan
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
FAIRBAIRN Thomas M 20 Agricultural Labourer Lanarkshire
FAIRBAIRN Mirren F 20 Lanarkshire
FAIRBAIRN Thomas M 2m Lanarkshire
LEGGAT Jane F 10 Female Servant Lanarkshire
MCALISTER Andrew M 20 Agricultural Labourer Lanarkshire
FISHER John M 25 Agricultural Labourer Outside Census County (1841)
Have you found them in later censuses? They should tell you where in Lanarkshire he was born.
If you find his death entry on SP it should give you his parents' names.
Kind regards,
Annette M

Hi Jean,
Welcome to TalkingScot!
To add to Annette's findings and good advice. The 1851 & 1861 are from indexes, so no more details. [now added]
They are online (+1871 too) at the paysite Scotlandspeople - http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
(the 1851 no. will be slightly different though on SP)

Strathaven? as birthplace for Thomas in 1851 is abt 10 miles south of Bothwell.
Unless they are 2 different families (rather doubtful) then it's just one of those errors that can creep into censuses.
Just like it seems to have with Marion McLean's birthplaces as Glasgow & also as Appin.
Perhaps after you look at Thomas & family on the 1871 census things may become clearer.

ALL the names were "ditto" from Thomas down, and so can only think that
Elizabeth's name as "ditto" FAIRBAIRN was a mistake, and her surname is something else.

Thanks to all who replied. I have got back to Thos F.b 1817 m. Marion McLean .
Thos' parents are Thos. Fairbairn m. Agnes Muirhead and
Anges's parents are John McLean m to Mary McVicar this marriage was in 1802 but I have beent told that there are no parents listed. I will have to check SP for myself.
I will be offline for a couple of weeks and I will get back into this tussle.
Thanks again ,
Jean donald.
