Help Find Mullen/O'hare Family of Stirling.....
I am a 63 year old American from Cleveland,Ohio and will be traveling to Scotland for the first time this summer. I would like to contact relatives still living in the Stirling area. My mother was born in Scotland in 1913 in Bannockburn to a Rober and Sarah (nee O'Hare) Mullen. Robert came to America in the early 1920's and then sent for Sarah and my mother Mary. The O'Hare family, I believe, was large with 13 children. I believe that they had a home called "Ladywell" in the Stirling area. The only address I have is
Frank and Bridget O'Hare
105 Davidson St.
Whins of Milton
Sterling
I would very much appreciate help in finding my family and beginning my family tree. Contact me at Rpaul@auroraoh.com or Rpppaul@aol.com

Hello Robert
It would be pretty simple to have a nice start on your family tree before you leave for your visit. By using the online pay per view site of Scotland People you can easily start with the Marriage of Robert Mullen and Sarah O'Hare in 1913. From this you'll discover their parents names. Don't be fooled that Robert's mother is listed as Mullen ms Mullen as it surely appears her Death is easily found in Bannockburn and gives a different maiden name and another generation of parents. If you're only interested in the O'Hares...well....doesn't appear they were always in Stirling. You'll find Sarah born in Airdrie 1890. From this you can easily find the family on the 1891 census and note some of her siblings. You'll also notice that her dad Patrick was born in Kilbirnie. Pretty sure this would be Patrick on the 1881 census...

Robert,
Here is a 10 10 987 number you can use to make calls from the United States to within the US, Scotland, England or Canada. The cost is 53 cents to connect and 3 cents per minute. A one hour phone call to Scotland, cost me less then $2 to make.
Regards

For Marilyn,
I have just logged on and noticed your post about making inexpensive phone calls abroad and to Canada, using such as 10 10 987.
Do you dial this number and then the whole of the person's number additionally. Sorry to be so thickheaded but I've never done this before. A phone call to my brother in Scotland cost me $56 one time, so I seldom phone him because of such a huge phone bill.
Thanks for any tips about how to go about this cheaper way to make phone calls, especially to the U.K.

Hello Maisie and welcome to TalkingScot!
That's an old post from 2006 that you are referring to, so not sure if the 10 10 987 still applies today. I no longer live in the US but I would suggest that you contact your telephone company and enquire as to special rates for international calls. Usually these companies have very good rates for a very small monthly fee that is well worth the money. I used to call Scotland and England constantly and would be on the phone for hours and none of the calls was over a couple of dollars each.
Good luck!
Regards,
Anne H

Hello Maisie,
Does your brother have a computer and a high speed connection? If so, you can both get accounts on Skype and talk for free! If not, you can still get a Skype account and call his telephone from your computer and it will be very inexpensive. It gets pricier if you call a cell phone, however, so if he has a land line that would be best. We communicate regularly with our daughter in Germany when we are in the U.S. and our son in the U.S. when we are in Europe and even our son who travels all over Asia-- all with Skype accounts.

All the best,
Sarah

I've used it frequently since coming back to Scotland...doesn't cost a cent and I even get to see my little grand daughter growing up!
