Have you looked at Scotlands People at all?
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
There is what appears to be Margaret's death between 1881 and 1885 in Glasgow.. SP gives you the possibility of searching a female death using maiden and married name.
The death certificate will tell you whether Margaret was a widow or still married, which narrows the search window for her husband, John. Deaths often give helpful information, like the presence of a son or a married daughter or a grandchild at the death or the address of the deceased, which can move you another step on. Finding their son Alexander on the 1891and 1901 Census on SP could be helpful too. Would also be worthwhile looking for a marriage for Alexander, also on SP
Best wishes

Hi Mcgrice
Before visiting SP you can sometimes get very good info from the International Genealogical Index found at the family search website. An easy link to the IGI search is found through our sources tab at the top of the page. By entering the parents names it's sometimes possible to obtain the birth info of children. In your case it appears they had a daughter in 1855 which is the magical year not only for the beginning of Statutory Registration in Scotland but also for the amount of info that particular year's certifcate will contain. I was about to recommend you run out and purchase this one just to see what it might contain......but sadly you won't find it recorded in 1855.
Even though wee Isabella was born in July of 1855 her daddy didn't get down to the registrar's office til January of 1857.....pity.....
ISABELLA WILLISON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 15 JUL 1855 Shettleston, Lanark, Scotland
There are a couple other births listed on the IGI including one for Alexander.
Best wishes
