Can you help with a birth date c 1899 Glasgow please?.....

Post by calmar » Sun Apr 09, 2006 2:30 pm

I am trying to find the birth date details of Alexander Drysdale.

On 1901 Census he was two years old and living with parents Alexander and Elizabeth Barker Drysdale at 314 Duke Street, Glasgow.

I have details of his death in 1918 when he was 18 years old and training to be a Pilot in WW1.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Calmar

Hi Calmar

On searching www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk there is only 1 birth for an Alexander Drysdale in Dennistoun Lanark in 1899. Looks like a good bet

The Commonwealth Graves Commission site shows his place of birth as Glasgow and parents as Alexander DRYSDALE and Elizabeth Barker DRYSDALE, altho' by 1918, they were living in Penwortham, whereever that is

You now need to spend a few bawbies by going onto the www.scotslandspeople.gov.uk website, registering, buying a few credits, and looking for a birth of an Alexander DRYSDALE in the period 1898 to 1900. There's only 3, of which only one in Glasgow, who is your man (see Jean Jeanie's post =D> )

That birth register entry gives you the place and date of the marriage of his parents. That marriage register entry will give you the names of all 4 parents.

Simple looking directly for the marriages of those two sets of parents will take you back another generation, - guaranteed, - the records are there just waiting for you to access them. In others words these will give you the greatgrandparents of Second Lieutenant (Pilot) Alexander Drysdale, Royal Flying Corps. Not clear if he was killed in action in France/Flanders, or during training, but he is buried in Penwortham (St. Mary Churchyard)

It's probable that censuses, death register entries, and the IGI will take you back another couple of generations!

According to www.streetmap.co.uk Penwortham is on the west side of Preston, Lancashire, by the estuary of the River Ribble.

And there is a St Mary's Church there.

Hi everyone.

Thank you all for your replies. Very comprehensive!!

I live near Penwortham in Lancashire. It is my husband's uncle that I am searching for.

I have the details of the parent's marriage and all children (7). It is just Alexander's birth date I am missing. It says he was born in Glasgow on the 1901 census. Will look on Scotlands People for exact dob, as was suggested.

He was killed in a training a/c in Grantham, Lincs. Don't know whether he got any further than GB during WW1. :)

Again, thank you for your help, much appreciated.

It indeed sounds like he was involved in a fatal accident during training, and never saw active service overseas.

Sadly, the attrition rate during RFC training was high.

Hi David,

Yes it was indeed very sad learning as I did of his death. The strange thing is that this son was never mentioned within the family and I only came to find him because the only aunt that is still alive at 92 years, mentioned that another brother was mentioned on the local War Memorial. It turns out that the other brother wasn't killed during WW11, but 3 years afterwards, but Alexander has his name on there. I also didn't know that there was a grave in St. Mary's Churchyard until I found the info on Alexander.

The other fellow that was flying the aircraft had a very distinguished War Record. He had an MC for bravery in the Trenches in France.

It is amazing the things you learn whilst compiling your tree. :)

As you say, the marriage certificate gives a lot of useful info. Have managed to get back to 1840 for the grandparents of Alexander, with the help of records on Family Search.

Again, thank you for all your help and advice.

I am new to Scottish History and hope to get further back in due course.

Kind regards,

Calmar
