hi once again my name is john smyth i am researching the smiths/smyths of cambeltown scotland. i am trying to fill in some missing years, peter smith and betsy mctaggart were married in cambeltown in 1856 they had a son john born the following year.2 years later a daughter flora was born then in 1861 they had a son malcolm my grandfather. in 1864 they had twin boys charles and edward. i know malcom married in ireland to my grandmother bridget savage.i have no info on any of the other children does any reader have this family in thier tree. or know of them or what happened to this family any help you can give would be great i know malcolm and bridget lived in maryport in england in 1901 and returned to ireland to live sometime before 1920 thanks for any help you can give best wishes john smyth

Hello John
Your Smith family seems to mysteriously disappear. I wonder if your Malcolm was the only member to end up in Ireland or if all the children went there together?? If you search the SP records you'll find Betsy dying at a very young age....Peter not the informant for her death....Peter also not seemingly around in 1871....and no clear sighting of any of the children on the 1881 census. Looks like a lot of unknowns!!
Sorry for no better information than that
Best wishes
Jean

hi jean thank you for your reply ,i was not holding out much hope. for any info i never knew my grandad malcolm,in fact it is only lately that i even learned his name.i did however know my grandmother bridget savage. a lovely old lady who at seventy odd years old, looked after my sisters and me when our mum died in 1943.she did her very best for us,and i will allways love her,but she never spoke of her husband malcolm. i do know they lived in england for some years,i found them on the 1901 census of cumberland with their daughter maggie my aunt whom i knew very welli think the smith family from campbeltown may have came to england to live,i know that is where malcom met my gran, and then they went to ireland to live but only stayed there a short time before returning to england to maryport in cumberland still i will keep on trying thank you so much for your help i do belive betsy died in the poor house is that right . again thank you best wishes john smyth

Loads of Smith/Smyths who had been Magowans flitted between Antrim and Campbeltown about this period.
Many were employed in the Kelp industry, the boiling down of which produced a great many by-products including iodine and another agent for making dyes colourfast.

Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).
Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Ahhh, what a coincidence. I just found my first Smith...hehe.
Mine was born in Ross and Cromarty, father from Glasgow, and mother from somewhere called Andross, according to the child's 1855 birth certificate.
Luckily for me it is not my main line so I can somewhat ignore it if I want to...but goodness, what a NAME!
Good luck with your search.
