Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm trying to find Jane McLean who was I believe born between 1806 and 1818, possibly in Govan. I have no idea who her parents were. While working away last week on this, I suddenly realised that although I was finding her husband on the Census from 1851, he was there with the same children but another wife! It then dawned on me that Jane McLean must have died.
What I have is:-
William Clark and Agnes Clark (MS Clark from DC), son Mathew born Paisley 1806. Mathew is a Thread Manufacturer who marries Jane McLean on 3/7/1838 at Govan. Because this marriage is before SR, I've no other info about her parents.
Mathew and Jane have children:-
Jane B 28/3/1845, GLW married William Robson
Sarah b 9/3/1847, GLW
William b 17/4/1843, GLW married Janet Meikle Mories
Agnes b 4/11/1840, GLW
Mary b 29/7/1839, GLW
In the 1851 Census, at Deanfield House, Barony, Glasgow
Mathew Clark Head 44 Thread Manufacturer B Paisley
Marion, wife 25, B Wigton, Stranraer
Mary, dau, 11, Scholar, Glasgow (child of Jane)
Agnes, dau, 10, Scholar, Glasgow (child of Jane)
William, son, 7, Scholar, Glasgow (child of Jane)
Jane, dau, 6, Scholar, Glasgow (child of Jane)
Sarah, dau, 4, Scholar, Glasgow (child of Jane)
John, son, ?? months, Glasgow (son of Marion)
Janet Dunearn, Ladysmaid 40 lady's nurse, Bute, Rothesay
Margaret Macready, servant, 30, Housemaid, Wigton, Stranraer
Isabella McMillan, servant, 25, Cook, Argyle, ??
Mary Ann Campbell, servant, 18, Nursery maid, Renfrew, Gourock
This made me realise that Marion was his second wife. His first wife Jane must have died sometime between 1847 and 1849 (Mathew married Marion on 4/12/1849, Barony, Glasgow), inconveniently before SR! Since they also married before SR, can anyone suggest how I could find out more about Jane McLean. Waiting for the 1841 Census might give me an idea of her age and narrow down her birth, but I don't think it will give me any other leads to her parents.
The 1861 Census finds the family living at 319 Duke Street, in Dennistoun, right next door to Marion's parents. (Marion is Marion Brown Symington).
Any help/suggestions please?
Liz

Hi Liz,
This is from an index, so very little detail. [now added]
Not that the page will have much more on Jane except if born in LKS or not. [she was]
But it at least gives you an age to work with.

Searching for Jane McLean
Hi there Jack
Thanks for this help! I didn't think I would get much from the 1841 Census. This woman is really a stumbling block and it's very strange. I'm searching back from an old aunt of mine who was born in 1915 and who recently died. I knew absolutely nothing about the maternal side of her family, my main researches being on the paternal side.
I've managed to find with relative ease many of the other lines back on that side (about 40-50 people), but this woman has me stumped - she was inconsiderate enough to be born, marry and die all just before SR. With all of the others around that time, they've either married on or around 1855 or they've died after 1855. I guess I'll just have to work on my crystal ball.
Thanks again.
